Its the 'bearing' plate from your foot pedal assembly.
I would be located against the tunnel, the pedal shaft running through it.

right after asking on my local club forum there seems to be some doubt over my bug being a 66, some seem to think that its a 67 with earlier deck lid etc added so....

the date of registration on the v5 is 12/9/66 so does this make it a 66 or 67?

the chap brought the v5 round for me to sign last night as when he delivered the bug he forgot to bring it ::)

so the story begins... my mate brought the 66 then decided he couldnt afford to restore it so sold it to me but the chap who delivered it had brought it previous to my mate.

what we (me and my mate) didnt know was that the original owner had brought brand new wide 5 drums for it, so this chap turns up with a v5 and four new drums and offers them to me for 80 quid i barter and get him down to 40 quid, he leaves grumbling and im a happy chappy...... however when i opened the boxes inside i find all new brake pipes, clips and various other brake related bits that were missing from the bug, so the sneaky fooker had removed the drums before passing it on to my mate, then proceeded to sell them to me seperately >:(

though if he hadnt have brought them i would have never known and would be spending a lot more buying them from a shop

yep round buttons, ivory knobs and its definately a D reg

E Reg's ran from 1st Jan 1967 to 31 July 1967, so D reg is correct - but in VW model years its a 67 model I think.

66 was the last of what I call the 'old style'.
Do your vent window latches have chrome handles or a plastic knobs?
My 66 also still never had hazard lights, 67's do I believe.
interior door handles are still lever type, 67 are pull out type.
ash tray lost its pull knob in 67.
Narrow external chrome trim too.

What a lovely project bug.
I love the 66 year bug..... last of the sloping headlighters!!!!!
In the future myself and boyf' are considering restoring a '63 so will be interesting to hear your progress.

UK 67's were Sloping headlamps, long bonnet, one year only Decklid and Rear Valance and 4 Stud wheels, some times with front discs and 12v depending on the model spec.

In the US they got the upright headlamps etc a year earlier than the UK for the 67 model year 12v with the one year only decklid.

yep quarter catches are chrome
no hazards either
lever door handles
no ashtray so cant comment!
and the body has large holes so presumably for wide chrome trim

Wide chrome is correct for a 66.

Sounds like a 66 to me.
You mentioned the deck lid.
66 was the first year for 1300 engine, the deck lid will be 'full length', also first year engine size badge was put on.
66 badge read 1300 later years read 1300cc.

well its been a while since i updated and not a lot has changed really, the camper has been recieving most of my time and money so the 66 is on the back burner.
