How many here dread the MOT test on their ancient Beetle. I used to have a local MOT station in my part of London that let me take part in the test, sitting in the car, operating signals, lights, steering etc.

One garage used to road test the cable brakes, not using the rolling road (although I worried about the crash box being driven without experience). Now stations want to test them on the rolling road.

Those around me now don't allow me near the car or to even point out things to the tester. I have to sit away from the area and watch while semaphores, bonnet support and such like are exposed to risk of damage due to unawareness. I MOT'd my '58 recently, and was uncomfortable the attitude they had to the car. This means that my splits and Tatras will continue not seeing use, even Rattletrap will stay away. 😞

John, Get friendly with any local classic car specialists and find out who they use for MOTs.
I found out who Storacar were using for all the cars they looked after and paid them a visit.
They were very obviously well versed in MOTing 'odd' stuff!

To rerail this topic, there is talk of MOTs being changed to bi-annually here, another European interfereance. In Germany cars that are very old are exempt I believe:?

The way to end a good day out with your Split is with an Ovaltine!

I'd hate to think what sheds people would drive in the UK if an MOT was not needed for 'classic' cars.

Why would they need to get into the under bonnet area? Just leave the spare on the back seat if (I'm not sure it's even tested) you think they might bend your bonnet/prop etc.

As far as the rest goes, I see no reason why you couldn't be present at the MOT. At my MOT place I could stand a few metres form the car if I really wanted.

In Ireland there is No MOT Required on Pre 1980 Car's , Yes there are alot of Heap's on The Road !
Talk's are taking place about Yearly Test's on Classic's Which I would be in favour of Testing All Classic's.

I copied this from Last Triumph's thread 'Mr Sherbie':lol: it was your great reply to me raising the MOT issue prior to this thread's start.

Good grief neither would I :shock: :lol: We are always 'present' during an mot. And my mot tester's have to go through thorough rigorous verbal and non verbal reasoning testing before they are allowed to touch anything :lol:
But you are even worse than me for lack of use :lol: I keep my split mot'd just so I can go to war & peace if I fancy it, no london, no motorways or main roads involved, all country lanes round here. Blimey mine would also be housebound If I lived in London so I dont blame you!:lol:
