Hi All
here's my'ginger'!! :D 1956 Oval Convertible project.
came as a shell with the original hoodframe
as you can see it needs a bit of sand down, but it is only surface, was paint stripped and left in the elements by a previous owner! and is one of the most solid bugs i have seen in 20 years of bugging!...heater channels strenghtheners, rear h valance and inner wings are all solid!..
needs some minimal welding and panel reparwork but nothing drastic!
unfortunately lost its original pan, but i have a semi restored 62 pre suffix reg pan to put it on, and an original 30 horse 56 engine to fit.
anyway watch this space for progress pics!

one thing, I would remove these ! you will be surprised how it looks underneath, probebly surface rust, but if your car is painted these are the spots where it start showing rust after a few years !

Nice work
Just one thing / question:-
The floorpan is RHD but has a LHD dash. Are you going to put a new dash in and convert it or do you have a LHD floorpan for it ?
Just being curious, (nosey  )
Chris
Posted by: THEBOFFIN - 02 June 2008 18:49:42
Hi
i did have a RHD oval dash...but decided to keep it as original as i can LHD, so i'm modifying the pan to LHD...much easier than a dash cut too! :D

hi
can anyone confirm the paint mix for Inca Red and wether it is metalic or not??
thanks
adam
Posted by: '50 Karmann - 11 June 2008 20:30:36
Paint code for Inca Red is L258.
Searched on the Glasurit(supplier to vw)website,no record. That's going to be tough, finding the formula.
The inside of your glovebox lid does it still have original paint. :?:
If so,you may be better off going from a scan of that.
No record of formula on the samba either.
Have only ever seen pictures of one other car painted Inca Red,like yours a mid '50's Karmann.
It's a beautiful colour and well worth you finding the mix.I do believe it is metallic also.
Just found further info confirmimg colour is defo metallic

Hi All
more progress pics
working on rubbing down the rear end of the car, note that a lot of the original factory lead loading has been removed by the previous owner unfortunately, but it does show the original Karmann factory spot weld joints!
their is more patchwork welding to the rear than id originaly thought...i suspect there might have been some rear end damage at some point as the rear H valance has been grafted in and bits of the engine bay and rear bumper mount has been replaced, but with original panels cut from other cars!

Has the car had a rear end clip?
Some of the joints on the rear quarters and to each side of the engine bay opening do not look Karmann.

But it needs to be a sample who didn't see much sun...

But it needs to be a sample who didn't see much sun...

Hi all
come to a bit of a crossroads with my vert due to a lack of time, funds and that my enthusiasm seems to have disapeared, I'm unsure wether to complete or sell my car!, i pulled it out of the garage last week and loose fitted all the panels to see wether that would renew my entusiasm... see pics below...Still undecided .... Off on holiday for a week so will have a think and make a decision when I come back .. Any idea what it's worth ?... I've got 90% of parts with it... Sitting on restored pre suffix 1962 pan with current v5
cheers

Hi
After a lot of thinking this weekend and the fact that i'd miss the old girl and kick myself for not finishing the restoration, not to mention the many years and money I've spent obtaining the rare parts, i've decided to cancel the eBay auction and keep her.
keep watching, fired up to finish her now!

Hi All
Almost back to normal now, after a difficult couple of months, emptying the contents of my father in laws bungalow into our garage buried my bug, looking to start on the car again in the next couple of weeks now i can see it and have room to pull it in and out of the garage!
I hadn't realised i'd had it for so long, bought it end of march 2007! so four years!
I've got 99% of parts now i think, and as i'm going to use my LHD oval front beam, my solid 1962 RHD one, pedal set etc.. will be up for sale if anyones interested?
Having a good sort through my parts at the mo to fund the shotblast and prime that it needs...original 1962 Bosch headlamps, need to dig out the 1960's/70's NOS box:drool: ..that some of you raided at Stanford hall some years ago!
Posted by: THEBOFFIN - 07 March 2011 20:09:17
....My mate has lent me his trailer and car, so the vert shell is going to the blaster this thursday for a blast and prime! :D
Can't wait to see the old girl stripped bare!, then the work can start!
watch for before and after pics on thursday..should be all done within the day, and the price has dropped..just £150! :d

Good news also that she's finally going to the blaster. Post some pics up when you get her home.

Wow! :d what a difference a blast and prime makes!, the old girl looks great, as Trent said best £150 i've spent!!
As i expected the blasting did bring up some extra holes, particuarlly in the rear seat/luggage area, but all repairable and overall very good result!
the buckshot holes  and dents now show quite clearly on the rear panel too now!
All fired up and ready to go now..will start some repairs this weekend

Hi
yep it's very good overall, its had some original panels as you can see part replaced panels from other bugs..but all original steelwork, no repro's
Bit of a dilemma on that NS quarter tho as it's been butchered inside too, i've got a complete rear qtr that can go in, but i'm just concerned about door shut linning up etc. ,as it's so critical on a cab, probably going to just splice in face and rear ribbing.

Is there a factory weld along the trim holes? My suggestion would be to replace from the trim holes down. Then treat the other repairs completely seperately.

Not that i've noticed..need to have a look. Was that were the saloon was modified by Karmann to fit the cabrio panels?

I'm not sure to be honest, my '65 had a perfect weld along the trim holes on both sides - looked too perfect to be hand done, so I always assumed them to be factory welds. But it also seemed odd not to just press a complete rear quarter for Cabrios, I'd have though it would have been far easier.
I was thinking that as a lot of people repair doors from the trim holes down - that may be the way to go, but thinking about it now I'd probably go all the way up, would probably be easier.

On my car the cut line was above the swage line, which you can see (the dark line) in this photo of my car when it was with Gav

I agree with Rob here. Seems to most logical way to go. These days it's not uncommon. Here's a 52 in France that had a similar repair:

Plus you can brace up the door gap and make sure that nothing moves while putting the replacement parts on. If you go with a complete quarter, you won't be able to brace anything (although it's still do-able with lots of care/measurements)

You won't see it Adam. It's leaded from the factory, you'd have to melt the lead out with I guess something like a blowtorch.
Cutting it through the trim holes is what I'd do.
Posted by: GKL 7 - 11 March 2011 15:43:59
I'd go trim holes down.
Here are some pictures of a door we repaired, will give you a rough idea at what level you should be looking for the capping join on your 1/4 panel.

No Adam,on this occassion i'd go along the trim lines, because you have inner and outer damage.Like Rob said this way you can brace the exsisting panel and join.I think if you remove the full panel, you'll be knackered.
The pictures were purely to show you the location of the factory join.

Since my last post I've decided to make the car as authentic as possible.. Hence my purchase of the lhd 56 pan that was on eBay and Dave's 56 'crash' gearbox!... That will be fun to drive!..
So along with my 56 engine I've had from the start this is about as near as I can get to having an original 56 vert, without it being a matching numbers car.
So my semi restored (new pans by previous owner)rhd 62 pan inc original gearbox and beam, not forgetting pre-suffix plate XSJ 847 with full current v5 in my name and tax exempt will be for sale shortly!.. Watch this space,

hi all
now it's home new pics of 56 LHD pan, that had been sat for 18 years in the same place untouched!...has had new pan halves but done very well and very solid otherwise,..even included a free birds nest in the frame head! just needing a paint and cleaning off of some surface rust and green!..came with partial V5 and correct registration too, great!
Picked up Dave's gearbox too, in good order too, just gave it a clean.
Just need some of the missing bits now if any one can help?..torsion tube covers, rear brake drums and backplates, and gearbox cradle and big bolts..

i've read in the original oval VW brochure and the handbook that the de-luxe models and convertibles originally had a syncromesh gearbox and not a crash gearbox which was only fitted to the standard models?
...can anyone help..want to identify if the one i bought from Dave is syncromesh or not?
Posted by: vintagebug - 30 January 2012 11:10:36
What's the number on the gearbox? If it begins with the letter "A" then I think that means it's got syncro on 2nd, 3rd & 4th gears. A full crash 'box doesn't have the "A".
A '56 cabrio shouldn't have a crash 'box.
Dave
Posted by: vintagebug - 30 January 2012 11:30:33
I've seen the ad for your 'box and the number is A-853581, which means it's a June '56 'box with syncro on 2nd, 3rd & 4th gears. It's the correct model for your cabrio

Posted by: AW - 31 January 2012 12:40:34
Yes looks like the mounts have been cut and turned. It was how it was done years ago before all these drop kits came on the market. People also used to turn them the other way to go on off roaders.
Also it looks like the rear spring plates have been moved to lower it by the position that thay are in.

Andy,
I thought the beam had been cut and turned when i saw the pics , but strangely has only been cut halfway through then welded up??..any ideas?
And I want to go back to standard ride height, any idea how to get the rear spring plates back to where they should be at factory height ??

Not knowing how many splines its been droped and at whitch end is hard to say but looking at the angle of the spring plates maby just one spline on the outside fitting.
I would get the spring plate so it is just over the shoulder of the casting. Make sure you dont pull the tortion bar out of the splines on the spine of the chassis. Then you have to twist the tortion bar to get the spring plate over the sholder.(not easey becouse you use the waight of the car to help you) But its just gues work unless you have the factory settings and tools to do it.
Sorry for the poor scetch but i hope you get the gist of it.

do you know why anyone would have partially cut the front beam??...bit concerned that torsion bars may have been dammaged??...although i do have a spare standard but holed and rusty 1955 front beam!...

I doubt it, you have to remove sections on the outside section from the grub bolts otherwise it doesn't lower (don't ask how I know ) Might just be that they wanted to lower it, cut through half way and then chickened out. It's easy enough to take the trailing arms off one side, pull the leaf springs out and check that they're all OK.
Posted by: AW - 31 January 2012 17:05:21
Yes You have to leave an inch of leaf for the grub screws to hold and remove the rest it gives you a weeker spring.

Mind you the one from my 1962 pan is perfect, just set up for RHD...easy mod though!
...looking at the rear spring plates again though, and judging by the rust and no obvious sign of the spring plates being removed from the torsion bars on the rear axle, i suspect they may have been taken out together and just pushed back into place??...ssupose the only way to tell is tap the plates out with a hammer and see wether they spring down!:omg: ??

Hi All
Just a few pics on the pan swap...62 to 56!
Once the birds nest in the frame head had been removed (even found an old egg!)...the 56 pan needed a lot more patching than i'd envisaged in ...mind you i had been outside for 20 years under semi cover!...then a couple of fresh coats of smoothrite and it looked good!.....

Just need to work out how to set up the rear spring plates now to factory ride height, then i can get the 56 box bolted to the pan....the previous pan owner had bodged a later rubber donut and put it behind the spring plate in the torsion tube!...either to take up slack??..or more likely to make the car wider and lower at the rear!!!..pushed plate out by 10mm! never seen anything like it before!!
are there any special tools needed to set up the angle of the plate?, or just a protractor??

i done mine with a bit of maths and a large bit of cardboard. more accurate.

Hi all
after a long break ive now re-arranged my garage and flipped the old girl on her side to get the welding done....after the shotblasting a couple of years back the body has held up well..see nex few pics of areas i need to tackle...both rear ends of the sills need some work as can be seen, but i dont want to remove and replace them as they are 80% solid, i think a rust treatment on the inner heater tubes and repair plate over the bottom as i've no intention of using the heating system. :D :D   :D :D

You've certainly got your work cut out for you with the shell. However, I'm sure it will all be worth it once it's done and in paint

My Dad started to strip the 56 engine today, never saw it running but seems in reasonable condition, but won't know until we get the heads off.
Manual choke 28 PIC carb is missing a stud and the idle jet, theres a sheared rocker retainer clip, some missing screws on tinware, but engine doesn't look like its been apart, just covered in grease!
teeth on flywheel are chewed so will need the correct 6V flywheel if anyone has one?
Plan is just to thoroughly clean check and re-gasket plus sevice parts as neccessary depending on wear as the engine doesn't seem have too much endfloat.
Then repaint and fit  :D
here are a few pics...

Nice picts. Just one tought from my side.
If the car was mine, I whould replace the reinforcement rails. They are heavy metal rails with on the inside a V shaped profile ( v with a flat bottom. They are needed to avoid that once you step in to the car, the doors whould shut and open normaly. I had checked an early convertible for a friend a few months ago. With pict album from the resto.... Guess what, they did not use the original reinforcement rails but aftermarket...when I pointed them to this issue, they told me...they are ok. Then we steped in to the car with 2 adults (95 kg each) and the doors jammed terrible. The Z plate inside the heater channel and the V profile was not copied in the aftermarked rails.
I am sure you can weld them up but will they be ok? and what about warping due to welding.
My 1303( sorry rob:omg: ) was once welded on one side.Well done but due to the tension...The doorgap is not ok now. I know it is hard work but then you can be sure that all the work is ok. Just my idea.

Hi
Thanks, for the advice, just found a chap on The Samba in the USA selling replacement rails exactly the same as an original ones, as he used an NOS one as a pattern.
on the photos you can clearly see the flat 'V' shape reinforcement inside.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1089247
I will have a closer look at mine and see how much of the 'V' is left then see wether i can perhaps use a box section of steel inside the 'V' to strengthen the rusted section of the rails, while the doors are fitted to keep the gaps true.:d

You need something like a Draper Expert CR-V 15mm socket. Go to a Draper supplier and they'll have one (Car spares shop, tool supplier etc). This socket has a much narrower diameter.

Thanks Rich
I'll get one of those, we can then get the heads off and see the condition of the rest of the engine.
On first inspection its not too bad, apart from the top of one of the valves has a chip off the end and one pushrod is very slightly bent with what appears to be a very slight kink at the rocker arm end, although they are very subtle and you really have to look to see them!
My Dad and I both think these faults have been there from the factory, and the engine does not appear to have ever been apart previously
cheers

More engine progress pics..
cleaning messy tinware! :D lovely job!..will then paint strip clean off rust, treat, prime and paint...should the finish be semi matt black or gloss black?..bit unsure!
engine almost stripped down to block. heads look ok, will give them a good clean and decoke, also barrels and pistons are good on the one side and after a decoke spotted the original VW stamp on the top of the pistons!
Other jobs to do ..rewelding steering box locating tabs from rusty LHD axle to solid 62 one, checking starters and dynamos etc.
Flying along now :D  :D 8) really got the VW 'bug' back!!!

Hi All
Decided to tackle the door hinge replacement on one of my cabrio doors (which has bent hinges) using the 62 saloon door I had as a donor.
After reading a few posts on the web it seemed a relatively simple task!
First drill out the factory countersunk rivets on the donor door;

Remove hinges;

Secondly drill out the factory countersunk rivets very carefully on the cabrio door to retain the countersink in the door, which is essential to preserve the accurate lining up and placement of the replacement hinges;

With hinges removed there was a little bit of twisting/damage to the door skin and flanges from the original hinge damage I guess, but this was minimal and behind the hinges, so I reshaped and tidied up skin as best I could.
With both sets of hinges out and put side by side you can clearly see the bend on the original ones!;

To fix them back in I used M6 countersunk allen bolts and nylock nuts;
Once bolted up the new hinges looked good in the door!;

Gap is out of line slightly on door catch side , so when body is bolted to pan I’ll check again.. there could be a slight bit of flex in the body…but the gap for a cabrio body off the pan is great!

Once I’m happy and ready to paint the doors, I’ll tack weld the allen bolts in place on the inside face to keep them secure.

Important comment made on my post on VZi...very important to keep the countersink on hinge plate as well as doors!!
"Oh, I wish I'd known you were doing the hinges. Reason I say this is the second hand hinges you've fitted look to have ovalled holes from when you removed them. Over time the opening and closing of the door will make the door slip within the ovalled hole and cause the door to misfit.
I found this out when I had to replace my 59s hinges due to the same damage as yours. I also removed the upper strengthening plate due to being split and bent outta shape from the door swinging too far backwards. Had to weld the holes up and re-drill them.
I thought it best to let you know this instead of finding out a few years down the road after paint ;)
Otherwise top job :) "
Hi
Thanks for the advice
Yes i did overdrill one hole on the top donor hinge before i realised the actual hingeplates were also countersunk, and slightly drilled off center on some of the others, although there was enough coutersinking left on both hinges for them to locate correctly.
But yes i agree they could move in time which is why before i paint the door i will weld the bolts up in position and drill a couple of holes at the top and the bottom through the door and into each hinge plates then plug weld them to keep them secure.
cheers!

Few more progress pics..
Started painting tinware….cleaned front pulley, stripped back oil pump cover and behind pulley tinware, back to bare metal, but was quite pitted so used hammerite rust treatment high build primer which gave a good smooth finish,

then painted with a rattle can of BMW gloss black I had left over, got quite a good finish that I’m happy with!...gloss rather than semi matt finish , but looks good!

Barrels and studs cleaned…just need to tackle heads!

In great condition and original marked up VW ones too!

While digging through whats left of my ‘NOS Box’ I found the two parts of the oil pump gear sealed in original bags!...by putting the old and new together I could really see the wear on the original gearing.

Hi All
been a long time since my last post!...not done a lot in the last year except paint most of the tinware and repair/paint the stale air heat exchangers, some pics to follow.
Hopefully in the next month i'll be getting back to it again, starting with finishing off rebuilding the engine, then the running gear and pan.
will keep this post updated, keep watching! :d
