66 year-model – I have had the car since 2000, and have fully restored it gradually in that time. It pains me to have to sell (I always thought I’d keep it forever), but I don’t use it enough and have three other projects rattling around in my head – I fear this Beetle is actually start holding me back soon! Fresh 12 month MoT. All documentation from the restoration is in the file, and also comes with an original Owners Handbook, and also a Wolfsburg Birth Certificate.
Red Pigalle interior; the seat covers are TMI replacements, but the springs and stuffing are original – lovely old car smell on a hot day! Original vinyl on the door cards; the carpet behind the rear seats is also original. The rear footwell mat is original pigalle red rubber (hens’ teeth) – I failed to find a red one for the front, so that has a black LHD which I have cut to make fit. The seatbelts are original static seatbelts, and I fitted another set of period originals to the rear seats too.
Additional switch on dashboard is for the heated seats(!) – operates the driver’s seat on the first pull, and then on the second pull the passenger side seat is activated too. The standard heaters are connected and also work. The rear side windows are original VW Pop-Outs. New headlining – I did it myself and feel it’s an 8 out of 10; you see many on other “show” Beetles that are far worse!; new sun-visors. Has a Kamei parcel shelf under the dash, where the stereo and speakers are located; aerial runs within the A Frame pillar.
All switches, knobs and knockers are as per original and the dashboard is un-cut. I have added period style oil temp gauge to the RHS speaker grille. Grant steering wheel. On a full tank the fuel gauge only registers half full, but from half full to empty it works fine – was always on my list of things to fix!
The engine is a low mileage VEGE 1600 (3,000 miles from new) with a new EMPI/Solex carb, and a 009. Just been serviced (oil change). New clutch. Exhaust and heat exchangers are pattern, but in good overall nick and all connected and working. Gearbox is believed original from 1966 and working well. The front beam is an Australian import with new bearings – solid as a rock; front and rear shocks are uprated KYBs; front anti-roll bar is uprated, rear has a camber compensator. Wider than stock wheel rims all round, with high profile tyres to fill the wheel arches – I don’t believe in lowering Beetles!!! The 5.5 slot wheels are CSP; the originals (need respraying) and hubcaps are included in the sale. Steering box is a good condition second hand original, with replacement steering damper. Original drums have new shoes and cylinders; all pipework and master cylinder also replaced – and work perfectly; all balljoints and bearings have been replaced in the restoration. MoT advisory points out front bearings need adjusting – this work has been done.
Converted to 12v with high-output alternator. Headlamps are new Hella units and perform really well. All switches are as per original and everything works (horn, interior light etc). Ignition key matches with driver’s door and boot-lid – comes with two identical keys. Indicators and rear lamps are a mixture of 2[sup]nd[/sup] hand originals (tried to get as many Hella or Bosch logos on the car as I could!). Plumbed in battery charger cable with socket presented in spare wheel well for plugging into mains charger: easy charging without having to remove the rear seat! Battery is in good condition and holds charge well for a number of months if the car isn’t used. Everything works as it should; even the screenwash is the original pressurised bottle.
The body has been fully restored (bottom 6inches needed replacing; welding works done at Beetlelink) and then waxoiled – the only two bits of rust that I am aware of: nearside front wing, underneath the headlamp and nearside rear light cluster; both of these are easy to replace panels and not part of the main body. Originally White, I resprayed it Black which is now 10 years old and has slight patina but still looks really good; a few light scratches here and there – in my opinion this helps the car to look “real” and not look too precious (if that makes sense!).
The rear quarter panels were replaced when the welding works were done so it has post 66 “anti-burst” door lock catches – I felt I could live with this as they are much safer than the pre-67 “wedges”. Doors are therefore post 67 doors, but I comprehensively altered them so all the 1966 year correct handles and switches could be retained – I defy anyone to notice the difference! The car came from the factory with US spec bumpers, however the ones on the car are Brazilian quality so not original; they do mark up about every 6 months or so – a rub-down with wire wool sorts nicely…! Bonnet pull works fine, spare wheel well in lovely condition. Repro Albert Swan-Neck mirrors.
Asking £6,250; test drives welcome – car based in North Essex (near to Suffolk/Cambridgeshire borders). Will exchange keys for bacs transfer on the day of handover.
