Offered for sale is this very rare, very early, Type 22A Standard Microbus.

Yes it's a project! Yes it's rusty! However it's also nice and early and has some super rare features. All repair panels and parts are available these days with new, cheaper panels hitting the market all the time as well as the massive KlassicFab range. The bus is also priced cheaper that the other barndoor projects currently on the market.

Leaving the factory in mid August '51, this bus was delivered to the home market in Mahag, Munchen, Germany. It was discovered a few years ago on the German / Austrian border so has never travelled far from home.

Painted in the classic brown & brown standard colour scheme, other old paint is showing through suggesting that it was originally primer supplied. The Volkswagen birth certificate shows "no colour registered" which backs this up.

Early in its life the bus ended up in the hands of an electric utility company who's signwriting can be seen on the passenger door. The company still exists in Germany today.

The bus is full of early features such as the rear luggage shelf cupboard compartment, early style "backwards" speedo, piano hinge quarter-light vent windows, and early style side pop out window frames & catches, all updated by early 1952. It's an early "non rear bumper" model and features extra long rear corner aluminium trim pieces.

Another fantastic feature of this bus is the full length "extended instrument panel". This optional extra is rarely seen on anything other than deluxes, and this particular dash is seemingly the only example in existance of the very early style optional dash that pre-dated barndoor deluxe production. The very earliest Barndoor Deluxes that have survived feature a later style "early deluxe dash" with an ashtray and more regular steering column mount, before the more common deluxe dash was finally introduced late in 1951, running right through barndoor production with only minor changes. This "pre-deluxe" dashboard is featured in the earliest of Volkswagen Microbus brochures.

The bus sits on four 16" barndoor wheels, it's original beam and an early, likely original, transmission. It has an early style fuel tank and tyre tray, and both front seat and rear seat backrests. It has it's VIN tag, a nice clear VIN stamp in the engine bay, and also comes with a VW Automuseum Birth Certificate.

Hopefully the photos tell the story but feel free to contact me for more photos or information.

The bus is located on the Somerset / Dorset border in South West England, (DT9). It rolls and steers and I am happy to assist in arranging transport anywhere in the UK at your cost.

Thanks a lot for looking.
