VW Beetle 1961 - Popular Classics Car Magazine restoration project
My Beetle was a project car for the Popular Classics Car magazine. The magazine bought the car in 1988 (I still have the original receipt) & set about a full nut & bolt restoration between December 1990 till February 1992.
The Beetle was featured every month as the restoration went on from striping it, sand blasting, welding, spraying, (it has had a bare metal re-spray) new wiring & brakes, fitting the engine, & even going for its first ever MOT!! The colour is now the original 60’s colour called beryl green, as you can see from the magazine articles someone in the 70’s decided to paint in orange & put new style number plates on it!!
I have all the magazines & still showing the restoration, so you can see it has been restored properly & to a very high standard. As you can see it was quite a state!!!
The magazine kept the car for a few years & then I bought it off of them!! I have had the car since 1998.
The Beetle is still 6volt, the headlights have period yellow lamps installed which give off a lovely vintage warm glow at night. Interior is all original with mohair head lining all carpeted with a 60’s Blaupunkt radio with ‘kicker’ switch near the pedals to dip the headlights & original steering wheel.
All I have done is spent a lot of money on the period accessories such as the roof rack, front spot lights, rear reversing light, VW mud flaps, GB badge to name a few, I'm just after a set of Albert Swan Neck mirrors now!
