Boat people have thick proofing for sound as many have deisel loud engines. Thick rubber stuff stuck to inside of doors etc is best..........but not original.

Try something from the Dyna range of products John. Dynapad is the one to go for:

You have to stick it on to surfaces (it's self adhesive) but it works a treat.

Most decent car hi-fi shops will stock or be able to get it.

Yes I was thinking about the self adhesive type of underlay. I was reading about similar stuff that was bitumised and was very messy to use...is this stuff reasonably clean?
