I have a 16" wheel but I noticed that it didn't have holes for hub cap clips, so I wondered if maybe it was a Kübel wheel? Is it OK for me to just drill the wheel for the clips, or will I be put on the Kübel owners 'most wanted' list for crimes against rare parts?

I've had a look and couldn't see one on it, where would it be and is it coded somehow?

Usually there is a stamp on the flat surface between the mounting holes(on the outward face of the wheel).
It should be a small circle, divided in half, with the month over the year.Three digits in all.
This goes for Split wheels, maybe the early/wartime stuff is different.
Is it riveted or welded?

OK, so it's not an old wheel at all... ?? it says 2/55

Its a riveted wheel. Maybe it was made for something other than a VW then?

Not a Beetle wheel then. What year did 16's stop on buses?
No hub cap retaining clip holes, don't sound right to me.I suspect non VW.
Have you measured the breadth of the rim,or is a tyre still on?

You see these on old trailers sometimes. May well be one of them.

Opel would be my guess too.
I think there are many VW enthusiats who bought these Opel rims thinking they made a bargain...
