Let's face facts; this car is in absolutely awful condition, but by some miracle of fate and enthusiastic Communist-esque modification it has managed to just about survive. In its current condition, it vaguely presents a shadow of its former self with those tantalising VW38 features.

I personally believe that it needs to be 'reconstructed' using the original drawings to the best possible standards. OK, it's never going to be an original matching numbers car, but it would be a nice representation (and to some degree interpretation), of a VW38 car.

People replace chassis all four 1/4 panels etc on ovals and even 60s and 70s bugs! It is worth saving, but making no bones about the fact that it is possibly the most un original car around!:lol:

If this turns out to be what it's thought to be,it is probably one of the best VW finds in my lifetime.
I would have been happy to find and mount, on my garage wall, the decklid alone.
Theres only one trouble with this car.WHO'S going to do the work.If it's not correct at the end,WELL ....you can imagine.

I would have to disagree Malc. There are important features remaining on this car such as the decklid, decklid support brackets and prop, 80% of the bonnet, doors, and probably 50% of the shell which are truly unique and which mostly didn't survive on the other VW38 (#003). I think what remains needs to be conserved and used as the basis of a reconstruction.

If I read all these worldwide discussion about the quality of a potential restauration of that car, I understand all these people who hide their rarest cars and didn't show it in public until it is finished. If you think about how much of an vintage Bugatti, Horch or charged Mercedes is original of if you think that pictures of the body were published - put not the rest of the parts which might exist the VW38 has a good potentional.

Ultimately the whole discussion is getting a little pointless. If the car has reached it's final resting place, the owner/restorer isn't going to ask your or (rather surprisingly) my opinion on what or how it should be done.

If it were mine I would decide myself what should be done and then find the right people to do it. I certainly wouldn't be reading forum posts about the morality of whether it should be done or not.

I've got a feeling that's what will happen...it's a no win situation because there will always be people who will be appalled at the decision he makes.:roll:

But I say just do it and F**k 'em all.

The latest batch of pics show that this car is truly unique in its construction. Wouldn't it be nice to find some evidence of a body number on the car!??

I've watched The Samba topic from day two but recently it's just got repetitive between, should it be fully restored or should it be left as it was found.

OK, I was bored so I broke silence and posted a polite, "can't you STFU"...now they posting about whether they sould have the right to voice their opinion.:roll:
