Got the hint, nice try! Have to admit to recalling its had a mild restoration in the past (before DC) but it is basically unrestored as we know cars today.

BTW Will ***ALERT***ALERT***ALERT*** have you seen this?

Oh yes definately! This isnt being in tight mode (not me paying howeverUserPostedImage)it is just being in shock mode!

We are considering outting her back to a solid roof, they look better in my opinion as you retain the classic curves but you do of course lose out on the open air-ness that is so nice on a hot day!

Dint know, we are a while off deciding, I just need to bodge to sunroof so it can latch in!

Thanks indeed. Malc pointed that out to me earlier and I have pics from Christian already. Not that I've ever studied 3-fold pr0n before, but it does look very nice and solid. I hadn't thought through the process of fitting one of these until I studied the pics... that looks quite an involved job and it's not something I think I should tackle myself as "my first roof graft".

I'm going to be vulgar here for a moment and talk money: Until now, I hadn't looked very far past the cost of the 3-fold roof chop. I would ideally get someone with experience of this job to fit it, then there's the cost of re-covering it. Putting aside any painting costs, what should I expect the installation and the re-covering costs to run to, any ideas?

H'mmm, the recovering I wouldn't think would be too expensive as it's clearly not as difficult and complicated as a Cabrio hood. My car's former owner put a replacement cover on his 54 Ragtop (see below) as the cover was red which looked out of place. Would have to ask Mike where but that one came from the States.

As to fitting cost. Tricky. I would think it's at least a couple days work. So Β£30 an hour, 8 hours a day?

If you recall Ultra VW just ran a series of articles detailing the fitmet of an OG ragtop. Give Ben Lewis of Evil Ben's a call Andrew. He's more than capable of doing a great job of it and you'd also have a nice time in Cornwall to boot! Only one place for paint, TQR in Bude. I'm sure just the top of the roof would need painting, down to the bottom of the cooling vents and to the inside of the rain gutters, carefully blending out down the windscreen pillars. Talk to Gav at TQR. He and Ben work closely together so I'm sure they could get it all sorted for you.

As to putting it back to hardtop, I personally wouldn't consider that as it's a pretty hard thing to do without some major surgery. It would be very difficult to just drop in and weld a piece of roof and matches your hole and then would look right, and the only other alternative is to cut through the pillars and posts which is just unpalatable.

Oi, LOL! That's the first time I've knowingly been referred to as "the old man". 😳

Hmmm, this is only a mild panic: I'm not sure how far forward our Britax is positioned and I can't find a sideways-on picture for comparison! It's also too late to get outside to look! I'm banking now on installing this myself, but having to let in lots of new metal might be a deal breaker in terms of DIY.

Quick question for anyone who might know the answer - are the factory spot-weld 'dimples' around the periphery visible with the roof folded back?

  Sorry, no offence indended.

Yeah and he then had a real dilemma because his garage was full of HSU 681 and the amazing MTR 900 and one of them had to go to make way for the Cab.

I know that car - it is a total mixture, but then it really was resurrected from scrap and has been improving steadily over the last decade or so. The first time I saw it, it was lying on the floor of a barn in the New Forest as a bare and rusty Oval body, with an early split roof crudely gas welded on! So you can hardly knock it for having "incorrect" panels - it is what it is, and it isnΒ΄t pretending to be any kind of accurate restoration. The owner (Rich) is a nice guy too.
