Ok fair enough - I'll keep up the pics and details - sometimes you wonder that people have switched off if you post a load of progress without a response - last thing I want is to get all boring on people.

No pics you haven't seen already I'm affraid. Just hours and hours of valve lapping with a cylinder head on my knee. My wife thinks I'm secretly trying to start a fire the old fashioned way - and judging by the smoke coming off my hands on the lapping stick, I nearly did!

One head is now fully lapped and I'll start on the other one tonight.

Once these are done, I'll lap the tops of the cylinders into the head a little, then give them a final scrub to remove any final traces of blast material and grinding paste.

Then it's a case of rebuilding the rocker assemblies and building the heads.

I'mm make my own A2 stainless exhaust studs though - not paying £5+ each for them when I can buy a meter of M8 threaded rod for £2!!

After that I can do a final 'ring land clean' fit the new 'Grant' rings (nice items, I must say) then assemble the top end....

Thanks for keeping with me!

Keep posting LT. Just because you don't get a response doesn't mean people aren't reading your posts.

I've lost count of the number of people, some very well known in the "scene" who have emailed me direct or via PM about my car on the RW thread. They enjoy watching the progress but never post for various reasons which is fine with me.

So keep at it, I for one am really enjoying this thread and am looking forward to the point when you're ready to fire her up.

I was just thinking what an understanding wife you have. Mine tolerates it all but cylinder heads in the over would be a step too far.....

Last night was spent 'lapping' the cylinders into the heads. Thankfully this didn't take as long to do as the valves due to the softer alluminium head material.

The reason I needed to lap the cylinders appart from being good practive was that the blasting process leaves a very slight textured finish on the surface which isn't great for sealing which might possibly interfere with the sealing properties of the joint under the compression stroke.

UserPostedImage

I added a good coat of fine lapping paste to the mating surface of the cylinders, then inserted them into position in the head. Once in position, I just rotated the cylinder with gentle pressure back and forth about 20 degrees in each direction for 10 mins or so on each one.

This process leaves a nice ground surface for the two components to seal against each other...

Now all the messy lapping jobs have been done, I can give the heads a final hot soapy bath and then start the head assembly in the next few days...

Whilst almost bent double with abdominal pains due to some weird virus going round at the moment, I still managed to get one of the heads built up.

First off was a final scrub and clean in a hot and soapy degreaser bath to remove and last blasting media and lapping compound.

UserPostedImage

Then the original retainers and collets got the usual 3 stage clean up…

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

UserPostedImage

I then measured up the collets to the recess in the valve stem and found they were a little on the loose side. With security in mind, I set out matching them up in pairs, choosing a valve for them to live with, then using 180 grit wet n dry, I planed the mating surfaces of both halves until they were a snug fit with just the tiniest gap between them to ensure a tight fit.

The valve stems were given a final polish then cleaned, greased and placed in what should be there home for a very long time.

Decided another insurance would be new genuine springs, as the old ones have stood too long for my liking and some had lost a little strength and dimension from standing compressed for so long.

UserPostedImage

Spring compressor did its usual wonderful job allowing the collects to be fitted up…

UserPostedImage

And there we are – you can see the tiny gap between the collets.

UserPostedImage

And the head all done, bagged up clean and safe, waiting for the rocker assembly.

Good grief.

Have you seen the film of them putting the engines together in the factory? A slightly different amount (i.e. very little in comparison) of care and attention going on, really.
You can call me Al.

Thanks for the reply - I was begining to think people had given up reading....

This is an excellent thread, as I've said before somewhere! I don't make comments though as reading it is a big learning curve, so I can't add much. If the engine in my 1970 Beetle gives up, I'd just seek out a replacement to put in I'm afraid, not really worth the same effort as a 50s

The way to end a good day out with your Split is with an Ovaltine!

As was said, its a great thread. Not particularly technically-minded myself,so great to see the car taking shape as you watch.

Really great work; what hours do you work on the car?

By the time I get home from work, have dinner, put the kids to bed, I'm often tinkering at the kitchen table after 9, or down the garage in the cold and dark

Thanks.

I work in the motor trade so time of is very poor. I work approx 55-60 hours a week, 3 out of 5 weekends, bank holidays and only get 1 day off in the weeke every other week if I'm lucky.

Like you, by the time the kids are in bed and the washing up is done etc it's nearly 9pm, so much of the recent work has been done between 9pm - 1am...

Haven't done much this week as I've come down with the norovirus and I'm absolutely in bits.... 😞

I'm just off outside to fill my petrol tank with POR-15; it's had a hairdrier popped in the filler neck for the last 45 minutes to get it nice and dry. Done the same as you with your tank, Marine Clean, Metal Ready etc :d

Last winter was outside working on the car until 1am too... had to stop as it got so cold, my hands stuck to the push-rods

Hope you don't mind a question about the tank sealer. Just dried out the tank, and the inside has this white powdery residue inside.

Is that a zinc coating from the metal ready, if so, do you know if it's OK to pour in the sealer?

Yes it is, although if it is heavy, I'd be tempted to flush it again with some 'media' to remove as much of the loose stuff as possible.

Thanks LT - it's only light residue, so should be OK.

Trick question; how do I remove the gauze filter from the outlet tube at the bottom of the tank. The old filter is knackered, and I've got a new one from Status to fit.

The gauze filter is attached to a metal ring which is trapped in place when the fuel tap is installed.

I trust you have the fuel tap out and 'on the bench'? If so, just prize the metal ring up from the body of the tap with a small screwdriver etc and it should just come free.

It might be glued in place with years of fuel 'varnish' etc. Good luck.
