Hi

Moral is hang onto all your's (and mine) early original VW's. Like gold there is a limited supply and they can"t make any more.
Aston, Ferraris, Porsches, BMW old 328"s etc may be more exotic, but to keep em running costs hell of a lot more!!

Its interesting to note now, that outside vintage VW circles, values of early Beetles are considered to be increasing. 😮

Popular general classic car magazine 'Practical Classics' have now moved the split-window Beetle up into the £10,000 price bracket in their price-guide, after years of it being stuck at around £7,500. Ovals and other air-cooled VWs have moved up a notch too.

I've always thought this basically British car magazine, which is very pro Morris Minor, to be a little indifferent to the Beetle. Buy they are no longer able to deny the trend of VWs while listing the value of the Minor considerably lower at a virtually unchanged price.

Okay, a few blemishes, but it's a testament to what a 'good' restoration get you. I'm sure there are cars that were restored 2 years ago that look worse than that.

The car appears to be the victim of another valuable registration plate sell-off, with its 1963 'A' registration.:?

It had that same A-plate when it was on the cover of Volksworld in 1987, didn't it? Rather too late to worry about it now.

Wrong way round Martin. The 'A' registration was introduced in February 1963 to all areas except London. Not until the 'C' registration was issued did London join the rest of the UK.

The car mentioned here is a 1959 Beetle. Sometime prior to its Volksworld cover feature in 1987 it had its original plate sold-off. It wasn't even given an age related plate back then, but the 1963 'A' registration, as was common practice up until about the mid '80s when age related plates were introduced.

Seems to be common back then as my 62 ragtop is on an A plate after the OG reg was sold off in 1988

'A' plates were often issued for imported or re-registered older cars at that time.

The 1963 'A' suffix had a slightly shorter run, February - December '63, and, coupled with that, as London didn't adopt the system until later, a lot of 'A' registration combinations were not used. These batches were then so used in the later years for the private imports and re-registered older cars.

In fact, the 'age related' plates issued today are also registrations that were never issued way back.

That's actually incorrect. Quite a few licencing areas didn't adopt the 'A' plate and only started issuing suffix plates in '64 with the 'B' series. On top of that, a small handful of licencing authorities were still issuing non-suffix plates in 1965 after the 'C' plates had been introduced.

You're correct about the London plates though. Regions such as Middlesex started in Feb 63 though.
