I got the '59 running on Saturday for the first time in years. It took me at least 4 minutes to get it started :)

Good and pleased you did not need easy start. More than one "old sage" told me many years ago that engines become addicted to this stuff; no logical or technical explanation for this, as far as I know, but I have found it to be true on all sorts of engines (tractors, lorries, lawnmowers and cars) over the years.

A car kept in prime condition as Old Blue is should start without any additional aid, as indeed Old Blue did, and always does.8)

The electricals are always well damp proofed with a spray and the engine cocooned with a wool blanket prior to a winter lay up. I always make sure there is a good ventilation flowing under Old Blue too, with a dehumidifier placed inside the car.

what i can say is that to repair the rust that needs doing "correctly" the body would have to come off the pan and then only would you know how far the rust has travelled and from my past experiences it would be far worse than you first think.then you have to say to yourself when the bodys off how far do you go with it??.

if you can weld yourself its obviously not as expensive as paying £35 hr + vat!! but correct panels that fit well arent cheap and to make the ones you cant get even more so.either way its going to be expensive or very time consuming.

IMO you pay a premium as the car is original and looks not to have been previously welded and its RHD and one yr only colour BUT as said above if you cant do the work yourself forget it,if you can do it yourself then its a case of labour of love and not many people are up for that.

not a dig just being realistic,either way a very cool car which i would love to own (at the right price :wink: )

That's pretty much what I thought, and why I changed my mind - despite having lusted after the car from the moment I first clapped eyes on it, god knows how many years ago. What you do gain is drastically reduced bills for an interior and lots of other little bits which only usually come to light 3/4s of the way through doing a Beetle up. Did you take any photos of the work needed, Rich? A photo doesn't tell half the story, I know, but... well... (head/heart struggle kicks off again).

Yesterday really:

I was preparing to drop the engine out of my Oval, and was underneath disconnecting wires, pipes and the heater tubes. When I pulled the left one off, out fell around fifty hazelnuts. On investigating inside the car, I found more nuts, and what was clearly Sven The Squirrel's potential winter quarters. (Thankfully no sign of Sven!):shock:

After this unexpected surprise, I got the car started after many months of lying idle, and as the street was quiet, I took it for a little spin around the block, minus wings, windows, lights, etc. As the car has a sunroof it was only appropriate to open it, as you do. :d

It was only later that a neighbour told me there is a traffic cop at the top of my street, and as I am a member of a law enforcement agency, I too should know better.[-x

Mind you, it was great fun, and the car ran very sweetly.
