My German isn't great, so what does the A-Z stand for on the early heater knob?

Aus is used in Ausfarht meaning exit(it's not the biggest town in Germany, and all motorway slip roads lead to it:wink: )

I've seen a lot of blank ones, did VW include the letters on exports as well as their domestic cars? (did they expect us foreigners to know what A-Z meant) or was it just up to a certain year?

A = "auf" and means "open"
Z = "zu" and means "closed"
H = "heizung" and means "heating"

When you ask me the "lettered knob" was a zwitter thing only! Correct me when wrong!!

I think the "lettered knob" continued through until the end of 1953. Then it became a "blank knob" for the '54 model year. Not quite 100% sure on that though.

The A-Z thing is the same as the ZAR plate on split Beetles. The R stands for Reserve.

If the "lettered knob" did continue through to the end of 1953, then I need one for my '53. If anyone has a good condition one for sale let me know please!

Cheers.
