I have been experimenting recently in HDR (High Dynamic Range) Photography. What do you think?

Wierd effect! I thought was a drawing at first.

I'm sitting here messing with HDR textures on a 3d model right now. Its good stuff.

Why do it for a normal photo though?

HDR is very big in photography at the moment. I run a group on Flickr which specialises in the technique. Here is the link to the group. There is an explanation about HDR in the discussion threads on the first page of the group. here

and some of my pictures to give you an idea of what can be achieved here

Thats pretty cool, as JD says, does look like a drawing.
That effect would be good for those DIY prints you can do to iron on T shirts.

I had a play with the demo version of Photomatix last summer, bracketing at 1 stop under and 1 over which gave some interesting results. I'll try and post something up if I can find it.

Great idea Malc. Photomatix is the programme I use. The above shot was done with 3 images at -1, 0, +1 exposures and then merged into one.

That is COOL!

Do you do with with existing digital photos? If so, I've got 1 or 2 I would LOVE to get converted.

Unfortunately it's not that easy. To get the best effect you have to take 3 identical photos with different exposures. Photomatix then takes the tonal range of the 3 images to produce an hdr image. If your images were in RAW format it could be done, but I suspect that they will be Jpegs.

Thanks Mike, the picture has fired my interest. My camera will take a bracketed sequence and having a KK friend recently supplying me with a copy of CS3 extended I'm all set. 😃

Having said that I've read that using Photomatix is more successful than CS3, do you have any experience in comparisons between the two?

Finally, anyone got a "trial" version of Photomatix I can "borrow."

Photomatix is definitely better than CS3. You can download Photomatix from their website. It's a trial version but fully functional except for an embedded watermark. If you like it i'm sure there are ways to get an official version.

I look forward to seeing your pics!

OK I'll download it from their site. Weather's not too good for the next few days so the Ghia's staying wrapped up 😞

I'll post results when I have something to show.

some of my experiments with hdr from last summer. I think I might just have to get the full version. (Sorry no VWs so shouldn't be here!).

Some good photos there. I particularly like the rust one. Here's another of mine.

Downloaded the trial version this morning...took a couple of minutes.

It was drizzling when I took the dog for a walk across the fields and through the woods so not the best conditions for sparkling photography.

True to form I forgot to set my camera to aperture priority and left it on auto but it didn't seem to matter too much. I didn't take my tripod but braced the camera against trees where I could.

Processing them when I got back was simplicity itself and the results very pleasing considering they're my first attempt.
