The decklid, valance and back half of the rear wings look a different colour to the body in the photo above? In fact now I'm looking the offside front wing looks a little darker compared to the nearside front.

A few of the panels are still different shades, I had the main body 'zapped' by the paint suppliers and they mixed up a colour which is spot on. I had the rear wings painted and keep meaning to redo the front nearside wing and bonnet, I often think of completely stripping the car but to be honest I love the fact it is a little 'weathered' it means I use it more and I am not scared to leave it any where, I get more enjoyment from it than the very clean cars I have had.

I did incidently clean all of the grime from the underside of the car and waxoil it- I have to say it has the cleanest factory painted underside I have ever seen (and I have owned some nice OG paint US west coast VW's).

Maybe one day when (read: IF) I finish my Ghia and RSK racecar I might restore it

I think it is exactly two years ago as it is due for its MOT. It is a bit of a funny story as I was looking for a pre '53 beetle and had been looking for a while, but I found it hard to find one that hadn't been messed with, let alone for the right money. This one appeared on The Samba but only with one very small photo, I emailed the guy in Holland and he emailed me a load of photos, from which I could see it was decent.

I remember speaking to him to offer a deposit with a view to getting it collected the following week, but he wanted cash on collection and said it was first come first served and someone else was willing to go that weekend. So I tried to borrow a van and trailer but found it impossible to get the cross channel ferry as they wanted 24hrs notice for a trailer.

So my brother and I took off from Devon in my estate car armed with a spare battery, wheel and tow rope we travelled overnight and found the car covered in dust in a single lock up garage, the guy had never driven it since buying it 3-4 yrs previous!. The guy and his father seemed a little shocked that we intended to drive the car home (500 miles back to Devon), anyway we put the new battery in but it wouldn't fire so we towed it with my car, we probably did 100yards before the tow rope snapped clean in half!

I will never forget my brother at the wheel of the '51 overtaking me as the rope snapped, he flicked the reserve and dropped the clutch and it bust into life! we drove it back to devon covering 500 miles in 12 hrs:shock:
