Does anybody know which is more rare deluxe 49 or standard 49. As its going to take a lot of metal work to fill in all those holes, when i could just put new chrome deluxe trim on. I cant weigh up between the ammount of work and having a standard with deluxe trim on?

As to your estimate on the age, ive got a letter saying it was november 49. just thought this might help determin the trim spec?

Oh and its definatly black, the chassis was bordeux red. My favorite colour but very difficult to get a mirror finnish!

Lee,
The VW books, 'Progressive refinements' list the last body number from November '49 as 83175

The deluxe model was introduced in July '49.

I think if it were mine I would try to restore it to whatever spec it was originally. Standard beetles are very cool and very sought after.
(Expecially a nicely restored '49 std! )

any pics available of a black standard??So i know what im going to end up with? Am i right in thinking there should be no chrome in the window rubbers as well?

Would you guys suggest keeping an OE engine, or fitting a slightly more powerful lump and keeping an OE in storage so i can always swap it back. As im a bit worried about the 25hp, my ride-on lawn mowers got 17hp! Its going to be a massive jump from 200bhp turbo power through an LSD gearbox to something which is almost the same as my lawnmower. Im not thinking stupid (am I?) just a 1200 or 1300, i think id feel a bit safer with a bit or reserve power under the pedal? Its only an idea, dont worry people im not going to stick a subaru turbo lump in the back!

Im still waiting for a reply from the man, He works in film and tv so hes often away for weeks at a time. But my fingers are really tightly crossed. I hear the chap who took you chassis may not have a use for it any longer? so this may be my next hope. Although i really really want a 49' and in a ideal world my shells chassis back! Please keep me informed!

Sorry about lateness ive just got back from cornwall. My poor Landrover has been to Wales, Glostershire, and Cornwall and back in the space of two weeks. (Im amazed i manage to fit in any work, well they do say all work and know play)After 2000 miles im sore, deaf and very light pocketed thanks to Shell&Texaco. Anyway knowing my luck ill find a chassis in Scotland or something stupid.Let me know if anything comes up. regards Lee

Ive asked this question before. does a left hand drive split have any advantage over a rhd car? As i prefer the bbt50 but im concerned about the rather long trip to get it.
The english 53 rhd chassis is a v good price and is a lot easier to pick up!
Help?

Im sure bbt will deliver it to the UK for you for not much money. they do regular trips with parts for UK companies who distribute their stuff and have an enclosed trailer they can tow.

And with the bbt chassis you get an engine to rebuild too!

I'd go with the LHD too, it was most likely this originally. There are very few real RHD splits and it would stand out like a sore thumb as being wrong...

Oh, I forgot to say that it's only a couple of hours drive from the Eurotunnel terminal at Calis or, you can get the Eurostar from Waterloo straight to Brussles and a train to Antwerp. It's a loverly place to spend a weekend and you can check out the Bobs VW collection (and the floorpan) while you're there.

We went by train to check out the Heb before I bought it and they were very friendly and helpful. 😃

Malcs right, any excuse for a trip to Bobs.
I've purchased quite a few things from Bob and always met his driver behind Fort Dunlop in Birmingham(he also goes to London)Usually meet approx 8 am pay him take the stuff and away, never a problem.
I think the LHD pan is best for you Lee,i know the RHD pan, don't forget i gave it away(free)
