Morning all,

Right, it's MOT time.....

Bear with me because this is the first time I've prepared everything on my 53' Oval for its MOT myself. It's spent the last 2 years in mothballs and I'm getting the old thing ready for a trip in October. Here's a list of what I've done. Is there anything I've missed that they're likely to fail me on?

Lights / Cab checks:
Tail: OK
Semaphores: - OK
Headlights: Full & Dipped OK as well as speedo bulbs. Do they check beam adjustment too? I suspect this might be out...
Horn: - OK
Screen-wash: - OK
Wipers: - OK

Wheels bearings: seem OK
Brakes Front / Rear (new): OK
Handbrake: 2 clicks, OK
Shocks: OK - no weeping
Tyre treads: all OK
Axle beam brushes: - no excessive movement so OK
King & Link-Pins: - no excessive play, greased, so OK (Have also greased the front axle)
Track rod ends / gaitors: no excessive play or wear, so OK

Steering coupling: - Not sure on this one, but if it's perishing on the rubber I'm looking for then it wasn't too bad.
Steering box: - Don't have excessive play in the steering so I left it alone
Brake fluid reservoir - topped up.
Tin-worm all round: solid car, so no worries there.

I've also given the bug an oil change for good measure. If anyone has anything to add that would be really helpful.

Fingers crossed, eh?

Cheers,

Klaus

Hi,
They do check the aim of the headlights. If you ask nicely they might adjust them for you!

I can't think of much else..

Seatbelts if fitted?
Number plates?
Chips on the windscreen?

My fingers are crossed for you too, good luck!

Thanks Stan,

Thanks for the prompt reply. Yes, I've fitted lap-belts and they should be all good. No w/s chips and the numberplates are fine (as is the popes nose bulb)

Apologies for yet another question. Re headlight adjustment - I have the diagram and measurements in the car's original manual - do you know if these are these accurate / current? If so I'll get cracking.

Many thanks,

Klaus

I have no idea. I've never had to adjust the lights on a stock 6v VW, they have always gone straight through the MOT.
I think the headlights needed adjusting on the Heb when it came over from BBT, but I wasn't involved!

Have you checked the metal brake lines for corrosion and also the rubber lines for cracks/perishing? Other than that, it appears that you have all the major points covered. Good luck, be sure to let us know how it goes!

It passed! Woohoo! After nearly 2 years sat in the garage my 53' is now back on the road.

No I didn't check the brake lines, but will do asap just in case! Cheers for the tip

This is from Stonor in 2007.

As you can see there are a few bits that are wrong for the year - it's a bit of a survivor car, imported from east Germany in 91' I think people have just done what they can to keep it on the road over the years.

It has the later big window model doors and front wings, 55-60 tail lights and those weird "elephant ear" indicators. One interesting point is that it also came with what I thing is a pre 49' decklid - it has a pressing for the numberplate - but has a later pope's nose tacked on.

I'm slowly amassing the correct parts that I need for an eventual resto!
