In today's modern traffic conditions, there's plenty I can do to increase my chances of a safe journey, but the one thing I cannot control is whether the car behind has seen my brake lights, and there's nothing I want less than for some idiot who's not paying attention to turn round and say "Sorry, i didn't see your brake lights"

Sorry's great, but doesn't bring my Oval back, so to that end, I decided to fit some high intensity LED light clusters which arrived today....

TOTALLY and I'm so glad you get it.

I guess you saw the slating I got for converting my hearts to LED's. I will never be convinced that driving an old car as things were is great in today's world and any unrecognisable mod which makes safety more important than form should be accepted with open arms.

Best way to put is like this.... I constantly have the same debate with a couple of biker friends who continuously try to get me out on a bike which ends up in the same old debate about bikes being dangerous.

They get very defensive and keep getting back to the fact that normally it's the idiot in the car that caused the accident with the bike...

Which is fine, and I'm sure that being 'not at fault, and in the right' will be a great comfort to my children at my funeral...

They just refuse to 'get it'... Not debating fault, I'm debating 'alive'.

And using that theory, I'd take no consolation from having the most original rear ended oval in the scrap yard.

Shimples.

LT, think you've misread the posts, non other than those that agree with you as far as i can see.
Your right,no risks should be taken,as i presume you may be carrying a young family in the car with you.

I know everyone on here is supportive of the mod - it just makes sense.

Hi Martin, it was you're thread on RWUK that convinced me to make the mod, so thanks very much for the idea.

I must admit that a part of me thought "If it's good enough for Martin, it's good enough for me..."

As for carrying kids, then no - they'll not be going in the car.

I'm not intending to fit seat belts, so if we're ever going to a show as family, they can follow behind in the Golf support vehicle... 😎

Safety on today's roads given the amount of fools that are driving around is important, and you are right to improve the rear stop lights, but where do you draw the line - left hand drive, no indicators, no seat belts and crap rear vision :?

I know what you mean - like I say, there's a lot of stuff you can help yourself with by defensive driving etc, but there's nothing you can do to make the other guy see your stop lights except make them brighter ad more visible.

I've owned several Corvettes, so LHD isn't an issue, I've owned a Countach, so rear visibility can be worked round, I drive a BMW so indicators aren't a worry (joking)....

It's the only mod I'm making and it's easily and quickly reversible, so I'm more than happy.

True, but then you start getting into calculating odds and risk.

The chances of someone pulling out and hitting me head on are possible, but slim.

The chances of someone hitting me up the rear if they can't see my dim 6V brake lights with the sun shining on them are realistically high and present themselves every time I hit the brakes...

Like you say, where do you draw the line?

I draw it at higher visibility brake lights, others will include seat belts, others will include discs, dual circuit brakes, radial tyres, supplementary indicators, wider wheels, collapsible steering columns and really shouldn't be driving an Oval...

Let's not forget here that the pre-October '52 split windows had only one 6 volt stop light, as opposed to the ovals two, tucked-up inside the pope's nose. When I drive my Standard splits, that's how they are, and (touch wood) no one's driven up the back in many years of me doing so. Even the MOT man has to pass them as this:d

I'm planning on carrying my kids and have fitted seat belt points in the rear but that's really to stop a seat sliding around when cornering because lets face it, an early VW is not exactly going to get a 5 star rating in an NCAP test is is!

I've not fitted seat belts up front and I'll take my chances but I wouldn't want my kids to miss out on the odd ride in it. Not going to enter into a debate on the seat belt issue as it's my decision not to fit them and my decision to drive the car without them.

I'm all for safety upgrades, but do you really think you'll be stopping quick enough for someone to rear-end you? You're much more likely to rear-end the car in front when he slams on his ABS
