Have had a MAJOR setback with my Oval.

We'd spent considerable time removing underseal, stripping bits off the chassis before welding in new Wolfsburg West floorpans, and we took it to a local powdercoating firm. They rang and told me I could come and pick it up without charge, but when I went in it was obvious why.

Both floorpan edges have been twisted underneath, the floorplates are buckled along with the seat runners, and all our hard work is ruined. Thankfully the central tunnel, frame head and rear forks are undamaged. It looks as if it's got caught in the doors of the blasting cabinet, which have tried to close while the chassis was still on the conveyor belt.

The firm have admitted liability, and are stumping up the cost of the repairs, as well as the new 'pans. I've taken delivery of new WW pans this morning, however it won't be going anywhere near this lot again!!

I'm gutted, not only for the damage, but also for Clark, who'd done all the welding and made sure it was done right.

Sorry to hear this Gavin.
Was it some sort of automatic system they were using, machine instead of man?
Interested if it is,i've never witnessed that

Thanks guys, that's very kind of you!

George:yes it was an automated system; the part for blasting goes through on a conveyor belt, and doors close to protect the operator. Only in the case of my chassis they didn't close, but instead jammed the chassis in the opening. As I posted yesterday, it's repairable, and I have the bits, but it's the grief involved in doing it all again. ( I have a feeling the operator either wasn't paying attention, or else wasn't actually there once it had all started moving.)

Ian: I read about your upset, and felt for you, not thinking for a minute something similar could happen to me! I know your car, and a few of the previous owners!!

To anyone who is considering getting this type of work done, please make sure you check out the firm you approach. The company who've damaged my chassis have done vehicle work before, but I don't think they've ever tackled a VW chassis.

Best,

Gavin

Took our treasured Old Blue out for a mid-winter spin. Such mild weather and dry too. Reckon a few more oldies could get out on the road this weekend.:d

Went into the garage and found a firework rocket lying beside the '51. Strange??
Looked up and saw a 5cm diameter hole in one of the translucent roof panels!! Must have come down like a stone and straight through the roof. Missed the car by about a foot. Then had to seal up the roof panel. Bloody bonfire night!

Just found Old Blue has developed an axle boot leak. Both boots are original, so I guess I can't complain to VW.
