Prompted by comments readable in the ongoing spat "Old Blue v GKL 7" on the'53-'57 Forum including the merit/morality/justification for retaining or transferring "Cherished" registration marks and numbers, I enquire whether it has yet been ascertained whether the removal of pre-1960 cars ( ie those no longer requiring annual MoT ) from the list of those eligible for their plates to be transferred or retained after mid-November has been authoritatively determined ? Voluntary submission for Testing to circumvent legislation seems as widely suggested as the permanence of a registration number's attachment to a specific vehicle once taxed ( Free of Duty/Fee ) in the 'Historic' category.
Hopefully someone can clear up the ambiguity surrounding number plate transfers to pre-1960 vehicles and the potential pitfalls arising from innocent "Loss" of a cherished plate put temporarily onto an 'Historic' car, irrespective of the plate value. ?
Thanks in anticipation - John

In the letter from DVLA sent to classic car clubs it states that cherished number transfers and retentions will still be allowed but that the donor vehicle will need to pass a voluntary MoT first to establish that it still exists. So yes number plate transfers are still possible.

Correct as I understand it. The car will require an MOT certificate and probably will need to be presented for inspection.

Not wanting to be gloomy at this time of the year, but there are rumours going around in the classic car press that the road tax exemption will be scrapped.

This is something I'll be following, more especially as only one of our cars attract road tax.

The government are after money and spending as little of it as they can.

IMHO

If they stop something like MOT's for pre '60 vehicles it is either a cost cutting excercise or an effort to cut down on pressures on the DVLA system. That is, the expense is usually more than the revenue. And in their statement they declare this group of owners are most likely the ones that will ensure their cars are safe for the road.

The same goes for tax discs,in these days of fast electronic checks often from a hand held unit, they have decided to cut the expense of issueing said tax discs.

In the same breath how can they stop the sale/transferal of classic/personalised plates for the "common" man, when they want to continue to gain revenue by selling them, themselves.
Needing an MOT is purely to prevent numbers being pulled from unroadworthy vehicles, maybe ones that are little more than scrap.

The DVLA are claiming they are overworked and cannot keep up with ever increasing demands on their system. So more money would have to be spent to bring their system and staffing levels up to cover the demands. So they are taking steps to decrease the demands.

It's all about money.

Which means that they won't be prohibiting cherished number transfers when they can charge for that service. More likely that the transfer and retention fees could rise.
