For various reasons, I haven't been able to do much in recent months with Rattletrap, and realised today that he is disappearing into the garden - nature is claiming the car. :omg:

So I went to it and cleared the growth of weeds pulling him into the ground - (a process that takes nature about 40 years). Decent summer weather has rendered Rattletrap no different from the last time I did anything with him, looking just as scruffy as ever, but no worse.

Old London buses are an interest of mine other than Rattletrap. They have been a part of my life for various reasons.

Anyway I found this wonderful picture taken c1962, (no, NOT by me). It appears that the driver of the Deluxe sunroof Oval, bottom left, was a bus enthusiast - he's pulled over in a hurry and jumped out of the car to grab this historic picture. His young son is peering through the rear window - and his wife is probably shouting to him to get back in the car. Such was his hurry to get the picture, the left semaphore of the VW is still sticking out (look carefully, you can see it's reflection on the side window).:smile:

The picture was probably taken on the last day of trolleybus operation on route 604. The bus passing is an RT c1950, the forebear of the RM (Routemaster).

That's a very interesting picture. I was living in the area at that time during my formative years. It was sad to see the old London trolleys disappear from the roads - what a mistake that was with all today's pollution worries in the capital.

My music teacher Mr Stokes had a black Beetle, though I can't be 100% if it was an oval being so long ago, but being the early 1960s there was a good chance it was. Back then the Beetle seemed a strange car, and it was only known as the Volkswagen, though class mates had a rather different name for it, you see Mr Stokes and his car were German, and the war not too long ago. I can remember Mr Stokes struggling to get his double base into the car a few times. I do not recall it sticking out of the sunroof though, if it had one, I'm not sure.

Can you show more of the car, the registration may jolt my memory, it would be great if this was Mr Stokes' Beetle.
1956 VW Beetle, 1962 Morris Minor, 1968 VW Beetle (Old Blue), 1972 Morris Mini, 2005 MGTF

Blue, blue, Electric Blue, that's the colour of Old Blue!

That's as much of the car that is available from the photo, I'd love to have shown more of it.

The semaphore appears to be the orange type rather than the later yellow, so this suggests an early oval (pre August '55).8)

I wonder if the car's driver thought that one day his VW would be as intriguing to others as the old trolleybus was to him.:smile:

Does anyone know the law regarding mascots and other ornamentation fitted on car bonnets:?

We know that Mercedes and Rolls Royce have their respective Star and Flying Lady mascots on their vehicles, but in rmore ecent years they have had to fit them as collapseable should a pedestrian or cyclist end up on the bonnet in a collision.

Most of us will have seen the ornamental winged bird and other types of bonnet insect deflectors, as well as the sideways mounted upright VW logo that sit on the odd treasured vintage Beetle's bonnet. But is this legal, would I be in trouble for putting such on Rattletrap's bonnet as a solid fixture:?:

Thanks for that John. It would seem that if nothing else, an item in the driver's field of vision would be deemed illegal and would likely be stopped by the police.

The bonnet mounted deflectors I have seen are well in the driver's vision.:?
