Thanks! iMovie - with text added from After Effects.

Very good little film.

How did you make the part with the pen drawing the logo? Some kind of Aardman animation style thing where you spent six months of your waking hours devoted entirely to drawing a bit and taking a picture and so on?

Nah, done in After Effects. It didn't take long to do, after spending weeks learning how to drive the program...

Interesting that neither the VW38 or RT are even in the film...?

But for the record, the VW38 is painted in the correct nitro-cellulose paint - a lot of extra work but something they are rightly very proud of

However, I thought that they were finished in gloss paint though. What does anyone make of these running boards. :?

I was told that VW's VW38 was 'restored' by VW back in the 50s and rather than make sure it was correct they simply used parts from the production line (even using a new shell). The VW museum are now keen to improve this car and also the Cabrio and are working with the Grundmanns to make them more correct (Christian was showing me the steering wheel from the Cabrio when I was over there).

This is according to someone more knowledgeable than me:

The car in the Volkswagen museum is a type 38 - built by Porsche. In the early 1940s - during the war, Volkswagen used it for testing wood Gas and modified the body.

Thats the reason why it survived the war. In the early 1950s, the car was rebuilt back as its design of 1938 - but they used for the restauration components of different years.

In the late 1990s, the car was restaured again by Oliver Herbolzheimer and he tried to give it back the original looks of 1938

The difference is that you only see the end result and assume it to be original, whereas the Grundmanns are very open about their restorations and all the details are visibile to everyone - so it's easy to critise how original it is.

So why was the body thrown-away.:?

I presume back then it wasn't so important to have originality and so replaced the body from the production line rather than go to the trouble of repairing the original.

I guess so. In the picture you posted it looks like it has rounded corners on the bonnet, which means the front scuttle area must be wrong at least - which is part of the body and supports the body change story.

That must be an older photo, I think it looks closer now...

Yes, thought it had had a revamp in recent years Rob. Looks better, but the front wings still look late, and I'll bet the bonnet and boot has the rounded corners still. Door looks odd, or maybe the window is down a little.

It would have been really great if they'd left it as the wood-burning version – especially as we have the Grundmann's VW38 to view now.

Anything would be better than the horror of an early Beetle in the Porsche museum.

Exactly, that's because its very shiny and never dulls, my argument here for more years than I care to remember with those that paint their 40s-50s Beetles with modern two-pack types.:sneaky:

You obviously can obtain the required finish using such a product.

That's a beautiful finish on VW38006 James, shows it doesn't have to be celly.Even modern 2 packs can be made to look right.  _K3C4937.jpg You have insufficient rights to see the content.
