Hey Andy..How do you get on with your parcels from the U.S?
Every time i order from the States i get collared for VAT and Import duty anyway.Makes very little difference to just buying here in the first place.

So last time i thought i'd be clever, just ordered a few rubbers and kept the cost under £30 as i'd been told this was the "Gift" limit before duty is charged.
Order came to approx £29.50.Little did i know that nice taxman adds on the shipping charges paid in the States therefore taking it over the £30.Taxed yet again.

Trouble being if an item proves unsatisfactory and you have to return it you end up worse off than just buying from KK or Status and taking your 10% Pre67 discount.

I was once even charged tax just to get my own items back.I had sent my pre '52 dashpods to someone in the U.S to restore.
The position was pay or you don't get them.Wouldn't listen to reason for a second.

I've bought some stuff from cip1.com in the states, you can track the shipment online. It came from Canada, went to the US, then to France, then to the UK - sat there a few days, went back to Paris, sat there a day and then came back to the UK and got delivered. It was the wrong part! Got charged duty, including the shipping - Once I'd proved to cip1 that it was not what I ordered, they sent another one and I had to pay duty again. I complained and cip1 paid for my second amount of duty that I wouldn't have to have paid if they'd have got the order right.

Definitely order from your own country if the parts are available... so much easier!

Drove the car back to base today and was amazed and impressed (as were other motorists, I feel sure) at how much smoke was pouring out of the back when I stopped for some badly needed fresh petrol. I think the left hand heat exchanger must have come from a blown up motor, as it appears to have been full of oil! Hoping it´ll "cook off" before too long.

I HATE that! Buying a watch from the States once. Presumably it was taxed when first imported to the US (forty years ago) and then I have to pay tax on it again on the way back into Europe. It´s a private deal between two people. Who are these idiots to stick their hand in my wallet on second hand stuff? I don´t even buy used items from the US any more.

Received the carb today Andy, massive thank you for that. Cleaned it up a little and lashed up my own bodge for the return spring, bolted it on. Took a few tries, hopefully just because it was a dry carb, but about the 4th try it started up.

I'll try it again at the weekend and pray that it's fixed it...

More fiddling with engine tin yesterday. Got it sealed up fairly well, and it ran a lot cooler. Still not quite up to scratch though, motor feels a bit weak.

It was a lovely sunny day on Saturday, so I fixed the driver's door window which had come out of the lifting channel and had fallen down inside the door, and then took the Oval out for a short drive  It's funny how you always have a stupid grin on your face when you're driving an old VW!! :d

Just went and tried starting the cabrio again and it started on the button. (no easy start necessary)

Need to take it for a run next. I've since had a little look at the old carb and there's a small crack at the base of the pump jet that leaks fuel, so it's probably shot. Another thing I found is that the oil bath filter doesn't fit due to the aftermarket dog-house fan shroud - it doesn't have the recess at the centre top - not a problem with the twin carbs I had on it, but a bit of a shame that the old filter does't go on.
