Well well well, what a fascinating insight into your personal beliefs... It certainly does explain a lot.

I can honestly say that I am totally appalled by the Nazi actions, and yet I am indeed a fan of the Beetle.

Although I don't like censorship, there is no room on this site for anyone who sympathises with the Nazis (or uses the topic to troll) - so unfortunately, that post gets you a ban.

After that though I do wonder if you can love the Volkswagen too much.:?

If someone who joins pre67vw owns a KdF Wagen complete with machine gun, military uniform and attends war renactments would they be welcome because I'd thought that was 'sympathising with the Nazis', and I'd find it very distasteful. That rules out ownership of Kubelwagens and Schwimwagens too:?

Yes but at what point do you draw the line. Unlike the 'Beetle' that had a dodgy enough start in life anyway, the Kubel and Schwim were made with a certain purpose in life – and it wasn't for going to Sainsbury's in on a Saturday morning.

Owning/Liking Kdf's, Kübels & Schwimmers doesn't mean that you believe in Nazism, nor does being interested in military re-enactments. But it is a touchy subject - I have certainly removed photos that have included the swastika, by request of members from countries occupied during ww2.

My opinion is that a car is an inanimate object incapable of religious/political beliefs, so it's all down to the beliefs and attitudes of it's owner. It doesn't matter if the vehicle is a Kübel or a 1970's bug...

Saying you need to like Nazi's in order to truely like VW's is way beyond where I draw the line.

Well I love the Beetle and I am appalled and disgusted by the Nazis actions. However, while I consider its fine to own a Schwim, Kubel or whatever in a 'decommissioned' civilian state, I find it very distasteful to see one complete with machine gun, swastika and the occupants in Nazi uniform.:x

There are different views to what is acceptable though. A holocaust survivor or someone that has lost family to the Nazis would have a justifyable deep-rooted hatred of them. They would find restoring and treasuring a 1940's-50s Beetle distasteful, and would never want to own a VW. Then take James May's comment on the Beetle - 'a mass murderer's car' he said to the Beetle owner. What would he call a Kubel.:?:

At a classic car show in Norfolk some years ago I had on display MRT 308, my '52 split. I was hammered by an old soldier as to why I restored and displayed 'a Nazi car'. At the Enfield Pageant in the early '80s drivers were invited to drive their classic cars around the show arena to a commentry. The commentator obviously hated Beetles. He gave out the most embarrassing commentry as I drove around – 'this is the Nazi Hitler's car, it hasn't changed at all blah, blah……

My point of this post is to show that people have different levels to what is acceptable on a very sensitive issue, including people here. Was Ovaltine saying 'he liked the Nazis' or was he saying 'although he disliked the Nazis he thought you cannot really hate and despise them if you own a Beetle?':?

To be honest I don't think Ovaltine ever really understood what he was saying or how he was saying it.

He seemed genuinely surprised that anyone should take exception to the things he said. I think he has a very real problem empathising with people...ie a basic understanding their viewpoints. I don't think that applies to anyone else on this forum.

It is of concern though that there are web sites for Nazi memrobilia, and more concerning that people collect the stuff. This I think may also explain Ovaltine's excessive posting regarding the VW38 – to him it's such an item.

One good thing about owning a '46 or '47, you can justify that to the anti-Beetle brigade as an item of British historical interest as it was built under the direction of British occupation.

I think you have a fair point...it's a personal choice but it does lose sight of the reality that Kubels and Schwimmers were mostly driven by ordinary, decent, moral grandparents of our German friends. Demonising Nazism is something I'm very happy to do and so do our German friends. Demonising everyone who wore a German uniform is insulting to our friends.

I'm not saying that's what you're saying John, I know it isn't...it's just an explanation why I wouldn't find it difficult to either drive or own a Kubel or a Schwimmer...if I had the money.

This week's Classic Car Buyer have an interesting feature on the VW Beetle.

This is a well-researched piece and some-one has really done their homework.

I know this to be so because they state in the opening paragraph that certain Beetle features were taken from the Tatra T97, and consequently Tatra later sued Volkswagen who paid them an awful lot of money.

There really is no smoke without fire, more especially as Volkswagen continue to remain in silence on this matter despite growing opinion around the world favouring the Tatra T97 as the Beetle's Daddy.

They sent me an email asking me if I wanted to advertise, so maybe their research was done here.

What is actually known about the court case/settlement? It could of course just have been a back payment of royalties over some design patent. Porsche was keen on the individual designers filing their own patents, so for example Kommenda had many patents relating to the Beetle. It could have been that Porsche never stole anything, but used ideas in good faith And then Volkswagen had to settle up after the war... But then that wouldnt be such a sensational story would it...?
