The car is definitely based on a 50/51. The current owner is trying to pass it off as a genuine one. The Grundmanns have seen this car and have confirmed it as a fake.

When I first saw this auction, I got really excited (how many out of the eight original KdF Typ87s still exist?). Near to where the ebay seller lives, there is an elusive military collector who owns a massive collection of pre-52 VW stuff (we're talking about 15+ complete Kubels, late 40's bugs, many split bugs (and lots of Ovals) plus at least two schwimmers). I thought that the Typ87 might have been part of his very secretive collection, but according to Christian, apparently not.

During a guided tour of his collection, Traugott Grundmann told us that as far as he knows his Type 87 was one of two which still exist.

This one was in Hessisch Oldendorf too.

I assume this the other one TG was reffering to?

Most likely. There's also apparently a Schwimm chassis still in existance that originally belonged to another Typ87. Also, there's a very good Typ87 replica in Norway.

The Typ 87 replica from Norway was sold to Germany about 7 years ago. With a Type 82E 5- chassis number on it. It is wonderfully built, with all original Kubel and Schwim parts in the chassis and a 1952 body shell on it.

You'd have thought that if you were going to build a replica car to sell as a real car and dupe some people out of some big money, you'd choose a model where more than 2 exist in the world... :?

belongs to a dentist of Hamelin. The car is based on a 1949 beetle. It was restored in a Type 82e Replika in the early 1990s. You can see pixutures of it in some books. In the end of the 1990s, the owner changed the design into type 87 and sold the car as an original KDF. A copy - but a cool one.

The car of the Grundmann was found as a wreck in the early 1970s in eastern Germany. The former owner restaured the car during the years and it took nearly 30 years to finish it. After his first trip on the road, he found out, that a four-wheel-beetle is not calm and with these big wheels not easy to drive. So he offered the car to Christian after the 1999 HO-show to give it in good hands. Once a time, the Grundmanns wants to give the car a better finnish.

Hi,
were the other orginal car is - this is a secret ( the owner wants ).
The only thing i can say is that it is in the eastern of europe.
An orginal chassis without parts is near Prag and an orginal driving chassis belongs to the Lottermann familie.

The front gearbox case has a 90 dereece angle for the speedometer cable. The original Type 87 has a lower angle in direction of the beetle or kΓΌbel dasboard.
