Hi ive just bought an engine. no: A 030277 X

can any of you give an accurate date for this? It described as a 1950 so thought id check to get a more accurate description.

It needs detailing but ive been told a set of plugs and some fuel and its a runner! 🙂 I think i should have a mushroom filter its far from 100% correct for 1949, but other than that im happy for now to have an engine.

any help would be appreciated

Looks like a 30ps block from distance but there are no As or Xses in 25 hp or 30 hp serials. Open the valve cover and if you find the long sleeve hex nuts it is 25 hp. You might find a cast date for the block from the left side of the generator stand.
edit: and it seems to have 30ps upper cylinder tin with the "cones" on both sides of the spark plugs. All the parts that are visible (gen, pulleys, shroud?, gas pump, coil, distr, oil filler, exhaust) are incorrect for your car.

Doesn't look at all like a 50 engine. I think you have a later 36hp.

First number is the day, second is the month, third is reportedly a combination of the shift number and the year (or so I've been told). Last digit of the third number should give you the last digit of the year.

Correct with the exception to the pre 1950 engines where the block cast date is simply ddmmyy.

I thought an X in the engine code means it was a Volkswagen Reconditioned engine? My '58 has a had a new engine at some point and this is a VW recon, it is a later engine tho with the fresh air tubes etc, but that ends in X which I was told meant it was a VW recon 🙂
