I don't blame Top Gear, I blame easily influenced yobs.
And lets face it, the whole 'Hitler thing' is not fiction.

Come on – you won't be saying that if a group of Anti-Nazi yobs smash your Beetle up.
We have young generations around now who do not remember the Beetle as a daily sight on UK roads. They are learning from the likes of
Top Gear that the old Beetle is a Nazi car and that it's also rubbish - you did read the above page from their book:?:
The new generations are not being informed that the Beetle brought great transport to countless UK drivers and families, probably more than our home produced Morris Minor. They are also not being told that the British saved but then turned-down producing what became the most popular car of all time, handing it back to Germany:?
Don't blame the younger generation – they only know what they are informed. The BBC yet again is not being impartial, and
Top Gear is doing its best to maintain an anti-German feeling with the Beetle becoming an icon of Nazism – that's how it will become to new generations if this type of thing is continually broadcast.
The Beetle may or may not have come to be without Hitler – Porsche did have ideas for a similar car, and any way, many of the Beetle's features were copied from the Czech Tatra T97 designed by Ledwinka. Porsche was friends with this fellow car designer/engineer and regularly crossed the border to discuss the People's car with him, later admitting to "looking over Ledwinka's shoulder" at the Tatra T97. This car I own and I can assure you of a very similar likeness, mechanically and layout with the Beetle. Volkswagen paid substantial damages to Tatra after the war for copyright infringements. I have covered this subject in detail before on this forum. The Tatra T97 is the real Beetle prototype say many Czech people and Ledwinka followers. Not surprisingly, no mention of the Tatra appears in the VW Museum – but Volkswagen
DID pay Tatra those damages
Here is a picture of my pre war Tatra T97. There are other Tatras, but it is this the T97 that was the basis of the Beetle 😎
This car was hidden away behind the Iron Curtain
