Top Gear has my forgiveness for its anti-Beetle comments (for now).

Last night's show was hilarious

Shame they waste so many vehicles though, even brand new ones 😳

The piece attached below is taken from the BBC Top Gear book 'Crap Cars'. The poor old Beetle came top or bottom, (how you view it) as the worst car:evil:

The problem is, that what may be considered a 'bit of fun' by Clarkson and co. is that impressionable younger people may think that this must be so, and that the Beetle is Hitler's creation as mentioned on Top Gear last night ('Hitler designed it' Clarkson said, and 'the worst car ever' Hammond said a couple of weeks before).

Now it may be coincidence that someone has now hurled an object at my nice and tidy 1972 Beetle which has happily stood on my gated-in drive way for a long time, denting the front, but the coincidence has stretched even further with the guy around the corner having his Morris Marina vandalised recently, (not with a piano though). I think that maybe yobs are thinking that Top Gear rubbished cars are fair game for vandalism:shock:

I think that the BBC need to be more responsible for the results of what they transmit 😳

The '72 has received immediate attention, and the worst of the dent is gone, (the paint polished up okay than goodness as its metallic).

The thing is that with publications from the BBC as shown above in circulation – I found 'Crap Cars' in the local public library – and with the constant slagging off and Hitler jibes by Clarkson and Hammond against the Beetle continuing, I think attacks on Beetles may become more common.

Nobody will be laughing to find their prized Split, Oval or otherwise damaged. I was upset that someone would do such a thing to my '72 on my private property, had my '49 or Rattletrap been standing there……:(

Thanks BBC, you take my money for your license fee happily

Come on – you won't be saying that if a group of Anti-Nazi yobs smash your Beetle up.

We have young generations around now who do not remember the Beetle as a daily sight on UK roads. They are learning from the likes of Top Gear that the old Beetle is a Nazi car and that it's also rubbish - you did read the above page from their book:?:

The new generations are not being informed that the Beetle brought great transport to countless UK drivers and families, probably more than our home produced Morris Minor. They are also not being told that the British saved but then turned-down producing what became the most popular car of all time, handing it back to Germany:?

Don't blame the younger generation – they only know what they are informed. The BBC yet again is not being impartial, and Top Gear is doing its best to maintain an anti-German feeling with the Beetle becoming an icon of Nazism – that's how it will become to new generations if this type of thing is continually broadcast.

The Beetle may or may not have come to be without Hitler – Porsche did have ideas for a similar car, and any way, many of the Beetle's features were copied from the Czech Tatra T97 designed by Ledwinka. Porsche was friends with this fellow car designer/engineer and regularly crossed the border to discuss the People's car with him, later admitting to "looking over Ledwinka's shoulder" at the Tatra T97. This car I own and I can assure you of a very similar likeness, mechanically and layout with the Beetle. Volkswagen paid substantial damages to Tatra after the war for copyright infringements. I have covered this subject in detail before on this forum. The Tatra T97 is the real Beetle prototype say many Czech people and Ledwinka followers. Not surprisingly, no mention of the Tatra appears in the VW Museum – but Volkswagen DID pay Tatra those damages

Here is a picture of my pre war Tatra T97. There are other Tatras, but it is this the T97 that was the basis of the Beetle 😎

This car was hidden away behind the Iron Curtain   DSCN1938Grey.jpg You have insufficient rights to see the content.

They are right you should sell your Beetles and get a Lowlight Ghia instead:
Powerful 30hp engine, fierce heater, quiet as whisper and comfortable (actually it is comfortable) but then the engine is in the wrong place too, like a 911 😉

Yeah, yeah… huge windows, modern slab-sided full width body, flashing indicators, the reliability and performance of a '50s Beetle…:d

Mmm… But I want the reliability and performance of a '50s Beetle but with lots of character and body strength in my classic car…:?

I know, I'll get a 1950's Beetle:wink:

:!: But hey, I don't want a single rear window like all the other cars…

I'll have to take a loss on performance to just 25hp, but at least I'll have that gorgeous split rear window

The slab sided monstrosity with massive rear window for comparison...

If you want off load one of the "Worst Cars" ever that you own I'd be happy to take pity on it and save it from the scrappage scheme 😉
