James May's hatred of the Beetle is more of, as we say in the UK, a "wind-up" rather than a serious editorial comment. I'm sure James knows the true history of The Beetle but the piece wouldn't be funny if it were well thought out balanced and well reasoned. It's probably the only show on TV where blind prejudice, is universally embraced without complaint.

I shall continue watching avidly.:d

That's it, I'm going to set up a Top Gear boycot here in Holland.

I was just joking about the boycot, I don't have the illusion I can do anything about it. And maybe it's just entertainment but when they start to destroy beetles, they just go to far in my opinion. Now they picked a 70's beetle, but what if they pick an oval or a split window to throw of a cliff or something like that? I think more people will be bothered.

I used to get really upset about Beetles being wrecked on TV, but that was in the 1970s and I was about 10 years old. The one being shot to bits in the first episode of 'Muffin', and the one they pushed off a dockside into the sea on Not The 9'O Clock News were standouts. 10 years later and I was scrapping dozens of the things for a living.

The more people bleat about it on the internet, the more they'll do it. Red rag to a bull. I'd like to see a few T2 campers dispatched, just for the overblown reaction it'll cause amongst the more fanatical dubby-dorks. It'd make the Marina Owners Club look like a bunch of happy scamps.

It is aimed at stupid people who find wrecking cars, caravans and most anything else 'fun'. They forget that the Beetle brought motoring to the masses, who otherwise may never have driven a car. Yes, I think that they really do hate the Beetle, they can't accept that after 70 years it has not been buried, whereas the Suburus, Evos and all other fast cars they love are 5 minute wonders people soon forget.

The programme's for the low IQ, its crap

its only a bit of fun...

People have been wrecking beetles one way or another since they were built, crashing/scrapping etc. At least this one will give a lot of people some enjoyment!!

The difference is that's illegal. Top Gear can trash anything they've paid for, morris marinas, caravans, motorhomes, even beetles.

I'm an avid Top Gear fan, the boxing day episode was fantastic. It's all a bit staged, but then again its TV so what do you expect. I even like James May - even though he's a Beetle hater. But I reckon if he knew that it wouldn't exist today if it wasn't for the British Army then he wouldn't think so badly of it.

I reckon that's a mexican bug, so no great loss - I'm sure plenty of those are getting destroyed in Mexico every week.

...as for me looking after things with feelings? Yes I do and will continue to do so.

You? You can just disappear into you garage and cuddle your '70 Beetle.

As was said before,by many people on here, the more upset people get, the more Beetles they'll drop from Helicopters. I'm not losing too much sleep over a Mexican Beetle. Two-thirds end up as Taxis over there, you can bet there owners dont polish them with a Chamois every weekend:wink: As with the Marina's they destroyed, the more fuss kicks up the more they'll do it. Apologies for the rant, just had to add my two penneth:beer:

Interesting that this thread has resurfaced. Let's firstly remember from my(Standard Split) earlier post here.... The BBC Top Gear book 'Crap Cars' rated the Beetle as the worst car ever. This book was written by Richard Porter a contributor to 'Evo' magazine, the Petrol Head's favourite journal. Porter's an avid Beetle hater, I did write to him way back and he was unwavering on the subject.

Not long after the last anti-Beetle rant on the 'Top Gear' my '72 1300 was damaged and it was in my garden. Coincidence perhaps, but I'll be on my guard after their next anti-Beetle stunt.

James May's hatred of the Beetle is more of, as we say in the UK, a "wind-up" rather than a serious editorial comment. I'm sure James knows the true history of The Beetle but the piece wouldn't be funny if it were well thought out balanced and well reasoned.

May's a smart individual that knows his subject, and must know the Beetle's history very well. The Marina's British and based on the much loved Morris Minor's running gear, but that doesn't stop Top Gear trashing them.:d

As far as Clarkson is concerned he has no love of anything unless its very fast. In one of his videos he blew-up a perfectly good London Routemaster bus. We know from the press, TV and Boris Johnson how much this British icon is loved, more than any Volkswagen could aspire outside Germany (except you know who). He could have used any cheap end-of-life double decker, but no he went out of his way to destroy a British icon and symbol of our great manufacturing successes, a museum/collector/show piece.

No, I think it's a 1970 model...so definately no great loss
