Mr 55cab
There are modified cars like yours and then there are the others, modified to look as if they are dangerous. I think these cars at D..freeze are not modified but ..cked up.
I know I am not cool but I do not understand why people do this.
Is Rat look just a cheaper way to gather some sort of acceptence?
Maybe even ratlook better than an MGB?

But how did it start......Lack of funds to restore a car?

Many people who have lowered VWs put them back to normal height when they get bad spine or neck pains. Maybe that is why it is young who have them. The ride comfort in a balljoint Beetle cannot be described as improved when lowered.

I have never understood why spend lots of money to make car worse.

But I not cool dude.

Tks Rudy, I think I can take that as a compliment!

All this is a personal thing and at the moment, I prefer the look of a lowered car, however I'm not interested in Rat-Look. I can appreciate why people think they're cool, it's just not for me and as George had said above, I often say Rat-Look is for people who don't have the funds to restore a car. 😳

I have to say I must speak exclusively to those who have spent lots of money on lowering their "rides"(please note correct terminology) and have actually improved the way it drives.

Mind you I also only speak exclusively to people who play a one armed bandit and are "still up at the moment."

Its all taste, but I can't understand that what is now a vintage car can look better lowered. As for 'Rat Look', if it is a nicely mellowed car and not a car deliberately rubbed-down and left to rust or full of holes, then I'm happy with that because the car is preserved much in its original state and can be returned to stock. Of course, then there's the 'Rat***trap' look…:sneaky:

Ok, I suppose many would class my oval as "rat look". So I will respond with my personal view.
If i tell the truth if i could afford a real top end resto, id do it!
But I really wouldn't want to rip the og headliner out and all it character for second best.
Im saving lots of of og and nos parts for an eventual resto.
And hay just because its no show winner why shouldn't i enjoy it? I dont drive it "rat look" because thats cool.
I drive it that way because in my opinion its better than someone fitting a saggy tmi interior and a shit blow over paint job.

I don't count your car as a Rat-Look car Si. It's a nice unmessed with car with a huge amount of patina.

Absolutely. Shoddy restos are far worse than even very scruffy original IMHO.
I am dreading the day my original headliner finally falls out, but I know it´ll happen sooner or later, and there´s nothing to be done about it.

None of this has much to do with deliberately sanding the paint off your car to give it a "look" though.

Not exactly to restore... It came from the guys who would built hot rods - their priority was speed over how shiny it was (real speed measured over the mile on the Bonneville salt flats). The cross over to VWs has missed that element out, so VW rat-looks tend to be rough, slow and handle badly as well - the worst of everything.

One of my favourite splits is the Wolfsburg Performance Services car which I would consider a true rat-look. Original tatty paint, but faster than a 911. :omg:

Cars that have deliberately been made look worse than they were (bare metalling and then leaving to rust for example) are just trying to be fashionable, I think there should be a new term for those piles of crap.

I guess I was lucky in that all of mine was already gone, I just had some aftermarket canvas over the frame - no headliner or padding. I'm not a big fan of my saggy TMI headliner though, presumably it would have been better if done by someone who knows what they're doing - but at least its better than it was.
