Malc, George wanted to take both his cars to Camberg  . Therefore he needed somebody to drive his '47 standard while he drives his cabrio to the show...... ......It was a tough decision to make, but in the end I thought why not. :D

Chris, are you guys doing the cruise from BBT?

Posted by: Chris - 24 July 2006 16:25:36
Wasn't planning on going with BBT. Didn't fancy driving all that way in one day and to a strict timetable. I can appreciate the peace of mind if you have any problems etc. Last time we made our own way in a convoy of 5 cars. Stopped just over the German border on the Thursday night, a 'few' beers then a nice slow and easy drive into Camberg on the Friday. Got there to watch all the other cars roll into town with a beer in our hands. :D Took our time driving home aswell. Stopped off at a Begium hotel on Sunday night on the way back. End up taking a week off work but it's worth it. What you've got to remember is that we have a days drive to get to the south coast. (And you southern softies won't travel to VW Northwest  ) To be honest, we haven't thought of which way to cross the chanel yet.

Posted by: six-o-one - 24 July 2006 17:44:23
I've booked a room in BC but nothing on-route yet. :D

Posted by: '50 Karmann - 24 July 2006 19:55:07
Gosh,by the time it comes around it will be twenty years and five Bad Cambergs i will have visited since my first.Where did the time go,it's making me feel old(and before Chris chips in,Yes i know i am old) The best one so far was when we drove in our mini convoy just the five cars we took it really slow and made sure we enjoyed ourselves.Even if we did feel very rough each morning. Every one i talk to when they have arrived in a big convoy with a time limit say they are knackered on arrival. Rather take it slow and count it as my annual holiday. If anyone feels like joining us we will probably do the same this time, limit it to six cars kick back and just enjoy.

Posted by: Chris - 24 July 2006 22:44:49
Well said that (old) man.......... To be honest, the trip to Bad Camberg was just as enjoyable as the show itself. No hassle, no rush, stop when you wanted, where you wanted. There was more of a queue in the middle lane where cars were slowing down to take pictures and wave to us  ...FANTASTIC

Posted by: six-o-one - 25 July 2006 11:39:21
How about a Heb in your convoy? The BBT convoy was hard work for me. I was leaving enough space to stop (cable brakes) and as soon as I did, someone would overtake me and I would have to drop back further. :? I spent most of the journey towards the back of the convoy and when I got to the rest stops, everyone started off again! Good fun though! :D How about overnight in Kent on Wednesday then Train from Ashford Thursday Morning and drive into Germany for Thursday night and BC sometime on Friday? What do you reckon? 8)

Posted by: Chris - 25 July 2006 13:16:08
I had heard stories of people going as fast as they could to get to the front so they could be behind Bob. And if you were too slow then tough.

Posted by: pre67vw - 25 July 2006 14:22:20
Not sure about that, but I think Bob was a little too fast to Hessisch - I guess his Denzil is a little faster than the split's on the convoy. Speed was pretty good when he was in his Rometsch to Camberg. The antics at BBT last time around were probably worth missing - a kdf and a v8 in a drag race down the industrial estate  Fantastic to see Paul's '46 driving along though... Here's a reminder...

Posted by: '50 Karmann - 25 July 2006 20:34:26
I'd heard that about certain folks foot down and dive in behind Bob. Malc you are more than welcome, sounds good, pretty much as we did it,the time i mentioned. May not be the biggest convoy ever but it smacks of quality. 50 Hebmuller 50 Karmann 47 CCG A few more cars to make up the half doz and things will be great. Enough for support if any major breakdowns occur, but not too many so we can't find a hotel.(Have you got a spare 50 rooms, please?) So it looks like an overnighter in Kent one mid way thru' Germany and a slow drive into Camberg Fri lunch. Have you sorted a hotel in Camberg Malc?John Maxwell did ours with the Historic VW club.

Posted by: six-o-one - 25 July 2006 23:15:29
Yep, was talking to him in Hessisch Oldendorf about organising a proper Club convoy to Bad Camberg and he reckoned it wasn't worth doing as most people want to make their own way. That's fine if you're an HO/BC vet but quite a daunting journey to make for the first time, especially if you have never driven much in Europe. The least they could do is publish a guid to visiting Bad Camberg and Hessisch Oldendorf, hotels, routes etc. Now there's an idea for this site Rob!

On the other hand, I like Camberg as it is - lets not facilitate it being over-run with cal-lookers etc. Lets just keep it our little secret

Hey Malc, you must be one of the chosen few to have Charlie Boy talk to you at Hessisch last year. We went on to Wolfsburg after the show and he even managed to ignore us there aswell    He finally spoke at stanford Hall this year, but only'cos we turned up in the '47and were putting it in the HistoricVW display. I know he can't be expected to know every member of the historicVW club, but as chairman you'd think he'd make an effort. Have spoken loads of times to the other commitee (yes, I know it's spelt wrong !! No spell checker available. ) members and they're all sound. :) So, now to find out who lives in Kent that can put us up for the night.....

https://www.autobahn-hotel.com/zeigeHotel.php3?land=1 Very basic motorway type restaurant and bar but friendly helpful staff. The room was okay and they have garages you can hire too. It's a short drive down the hill into the town and the sportsfield where the show is.

Anna, I would register especially if you know your car is going to be ready, last time I went without booking in and had to blag entrance to the field which wasn't easy, there were too many spilts in the car park which was a shame, Fez for example with one of the nicest splits I have ever seen was in the carpark. I think you are right Kev. We've been deliberating all week, 4 cars 4 drivers. With the Bug in thing I think we might just have to, as I think street parking space is going to be an issue this time. Be great to see your oval there Samghia, it's not about the best of the best it's just about old cars! and your's is far prettier & shinier than the 2 we are taking  !

Hello, I'm wondering if anybody here has info on shipping a bus over for Bad Camberg? I heard on the Samba forum that perhaps some guys in the US are sending cars over to BBT prior to the show? Any help greatly appreciated. Thanks, Trevor

Posted by: mrsherbie - 03 December 2006 12:37:40
Hi, I think you will have a fantastic time doing that! Shipping to France or Belgium a few days before everyone gets to BBT would be my choice given your plan as that will be your start of the weekend, why not email Bob or Gunter and tell them what you're doing and ask their advice, they are very busy but genuinely wonderful people! I know it seems early but you will need to book camping urgently now, there are A LOT more uk post '55 buses going than are on this thread! Its a very small town without multiple camping locations! Everyone I know is booking their ferries/chunnel right now! If anyone is looking for a cheap ferry, Norfolkline just sent me a flyer about early booking offers. A car and five passengers is £19 each way from Dover to Dunkerque. It's a fiver more if you travel at weekends but I'm going from Wednesday to Wednesday so no problem there. You just need to book online by the end of January and select 'Early booking offer'.

Best PM SDV on this forum. He made the booking by ringing P+O Direct. Seemed to good to be true to me but it's all done. We booked three cars one 4 berth cabin £284.50 all in the more of you go the cheaper per head it becomes.

Posted by: Chris - 03 January 2007 20:40:22
I rang P&O on 08705980333. They quoted me something like £235 for a single car with 3 passengers, (1 being the driver). This was for a 4 berth cabin departing on Wed 20th June at 19:00 and returning on Mon 25th June at 19:00. They then added £25 per extra car, bringing the grand total to £295 or somewhere around there.THIS DOES NOT INCLUDE EVENING MEAL, BREAKFAST OR COMPLIMENTARY STRIPPERS AS AFTER DINNER ENTERTAINMENT  There is always the possibility that if we were to make the numbers up to four, then they may just charge for an extra vehicle as we already have a 4 berth cabin. However, they did stress that if we were to ammend the booking then a ammendment charge would be payable. I didn't ask how much as I didn't think at the time of maximising the space. The best thing is that the ferry arrives in Zebrugge at 08:30 Thursday morning, therefore saving us a hotel bill for the Thusday night as we were going to catch an early train through the tunnel Thursday morning. I can't take too much credit for this as all I did was phone up and book it (and pay :( ), it was George's idea to travel from hull. I think travelling from Hull to BC is about a 150Km less than if we went through the tunnel...... And when you're driving a 1947 standard with cable brakes and crash gearbox that 150Km makes a difference !!

Do I get to keep it if it follows me home ?? :D Please Mum, Can I keep it ? Anyway, if I drive it to three shows I do I get to keep it like they do with cups in football ? (I wish)

We'll be going on the 2 pm Norfolk Line ferry on Wednesday 20th and coming back on 2nd July. This time we have a two year old in tow so need to allow plenty of time to get there and we're staying for Bug-in the weekend after BC. I managed to find a good deal at the Mercure Hotel in Limburg for 159 Euros for 3 nights as well. Get in there quick :D

Does anyone know if there is a convoy from BBT in Belgium to Bad Camberg? I've looked on their web site but couldn't find any mention of it. It would be nice to travel in a convoy, especially as this will be my first time driving on the continent.

He really needs a website though considering the huge amount of parts he keeps, his stand at War and Peace is huge! And its only Schwimmer & Kubel parts there! He only brings a much smaller amount of early beetle crossover parts to Peppercorn :D

The rooms were fine. the bar and resturant are just a motorway service station. Friendly staff, the chef said the he spoke "a little English" then proceeded to tell me what each dish was in fluent English! It's a very short drive down the hill in to the town. I would stay there again but found somewhere in the town this time.

Hi, Just come across the postings from people claiming to have been ignored by me at Hessich et al. Don't know who you are since you hide behind aliases, but I don't knowingly ignore any VW enthusiasts I know (with the exception of 3, who know who they are but are most unlikely to be reading this!) However, communication is a 2 way thing, and I must assume that those concerned didn't say hello to me either. A lot of people at Hessich - maybe I just didn't see you... Clearly, I must try harder at Bad Camberg! Charles PS Try offering me a beer! :D
