Crazy! Shame it's so butchered, but will be great to see more details come out in the near future!!

fantastic 8) that is a car that, no matter how butchered and modified, deserves to be saved.

In my mind I see all these Volkswagenquys, famous collectors and dealers runnung to find the holy graal in Lithunia.
: Only wish I'd found it!
Yes I thought that at first, but then changed my mind quickly after I thought about the responsibility   and the fact that you would probably not end up actually driving it anywhere, it will be ( quite rightly) an 'indoors to look at' car.

Good God!  Having just got over the initial shock of what that car would need to get it "fixed" I suppose it is not much more than a lot of cars on the road today! What I mean is that lots of beetles have had 4 almost complete new quarters, as well as the dreaded "bottom six inches" so I suppose there is not a huge amount of work there! Anyway, if it does turn out to be a pre war prototype im 100% sure that it will be saved and returned to its former glory! (and hopefully not just locked in garage for one mans enjoyment!  )

Just dropped in to say hello! Needless to say, I'm pretty stoked by the turmoil this has created. And I can add that the owner of the centrepiece of all this, also has been reading the topic on TheSamba! I'll continue updating that thread as soon as I get more information. That includes making a trip to Lithuania to have personal look at the car. Happy reading! Undis in Latvia

Posted by: JD - 11 February 2009 08:31:22
Good to have you here Undis. Thanks again for the photos!

Posted by: lifeintheslowlane - 11 February 2009 08:45:53
Yes thanks for your posts Undis. Thankfully most of the crap posts on the Samba topic have been removed leaving just the serious discussions.8) I'm sure the owner now has a good idea of the importance of his car. Hopefully he'll also be sensible enough when he comes to sell it, not to ask a rediculous amount and to choose who he sells it to carefully, although I can only see serious players making a bid for it.

Posted by: Standard split - 11 February 2009 09:11:07
I'll kick off the bids here with £8,000 :d But I think to restore this very interesting VW relic, a reasonable mid1940's Beetle will need to be sacrificed. So more big money. I'm not sure how I would go about this but as the '38 has no chassis and not much else, it may be a case of transferring as much of its remains to the donor car as possible, then fabricating missing '38 features:?: Problem here though, without the '38 chassis the car will never actually be accepted as a 1938 car – registration for example.

Posted by: Undis - 11 February 2009 10:54:17
If this car goes to the right person, it will get restored with NOS panels from 1938! And who knows, maybe even a correct chassis will show up... I don't think a mid-fourties beetle will be much help here. Only original metal and handmade parts from original blueprints will do in this case:wink: No matter how you look at it, this car cannot be resurected without the help of some very serious players who got the knowledge and the parts to do the job right. The owner is aware of this too.

Posted by: mrsherbie - 11 February 2009 11:02:53
a reasonable mid1940's Beetle will need to be sacrificed.
I am saving this as evidence that you actually said it!!  I agree it has to be dropped onto an old pan, a 1950 standard would still be acceptable and be far cheaper and more ok 'to sacrifice' than a 40s bug in the name of the greater good? 'NOS 38 panels'? I think that is a language/translation blip?

But you couldn't use a KdF, that's for sure, even rarer. But I feel the donor car would need to be as early as poss, and 1950's just doesn't cut it. However a Kubel chassis would be a good compromise

I thought Ferdinand Porsche started a car constructions office in 1930! He was building already small cars for zundapp and NSU between 1932 and 1934 In 1934 he told Hitler that he was able to build a car for the people, a "Volkswagen" So it was NOT Adolfs idee to start building VW's , but he was really happy with the idee, so he was using that idee for his own propaganda program  ! Even with the best, most original, most NOS parts on it, it will end up being almost a modern-day reconstruction where there might be more repairs and replacement than what's left on it. It may look terrible as it is at the moment but I almost find it more exciting like that, it is a witness to many years of history that it has gone through, it has the wear and abuse which might explain its long tired life. If this car is 'corrected' and displayed in a show, museum or private collection, how will anyone looking at it be aware of what it's been through, apart from observing photos of how it was when discovered? I think it's great that it has Volga door handles for example, it explains where it was geographically during part of its life. I can understand the total resurrection of a later production car because one might want to have a perfect example of a particular year model but this car is so unique that it almost deserves to be left untouched, as it cannot be compared to anything else yet discovered. Of course, it would have been nicer if it had been found intact but that's usually not how history and time allows us to come across these occasional gems. The same happens in ancient buildings which have been modified over time. Their alterations are the actual proof of their age and how we've helped them cross the centuries to be with us still today. Any thoughts?

If there were 3 or 4 perfect examples already in existance I'd say yes, leave it as it is but this could be the last chance to restore(?) or recreate(?) a part of automotive history. If it is rebuilt you can bet every last nut and bolt will be recorded of this car as it stands now...the record won't be lost so I say...if the correct parts are there and the detailed documentary evidence exists on how the prototype should go together...it should be done. That's my opinion, for what it's worth.

Posted by: JD - 11 February 2009 14:05:16
I see what you are saying, but my feeling is that at the moment its more a monument to Lithuanian inventiveness than to VWs history. Its kind of at the point where its beyond doing a sympathetic restoration.

Posted by: fantakid - 11 February 2009 14:05:42
I saw the pics of the resto of the 38 from Automuseum and there is not much left from the orginal car. The car wich is now found will have 30 % more orginal parts then this car. The cabrio from the museum is nice and very untouched but you can not use the car complett as an example. This car was build by Authenried ( a couchbild company ). They used a normal beetle typ 38 and build the cabrio. So the car has a lot more weldings and parts to strong the body then the normal typ 38 has. This car has to be saved and restaured the best way it could. This could be to about 70 % as orginal as about 70% of pics and draweings of the typ 38 exist - for 30 % there is no info at the moment

Posted by: 48REME - 11 February 2009 14:39:28
But if the car is not a production VW as many people have idenified above, how will the restorer know exactly what is correct for this car? If I understand well, these prototypes seem to have varied slightly from one experimental model to the other so what has been lost on this car might only be reinvented out of assumption, no?
...Any thoughts?
Interesting line of thought and I’m almost happy to agree with this. There is certain excitement and awe in just realising how incredibly this vehicle has survived to this day. This also was expressed on TheSamaba forum, that in away thanks to all the modifications it was not scrapped decades ago. The problem I see here though is that the modifications are god-awful and are infact falling apart already. Just look at the interior shots. It is a mess. If this was a compplete driveable vehicle with a number of necessary modifications made and all it would need is some freshening up, then yes, I would say keep it as it is. Also knowing that parts for this rare vehicle can be found and finally put to good use, and whatever is missing can be reproduced, I would like (IMHO) to see this car brought back to original appearance as far as it is possible. Some compromises may need to be made in relation to things like engine/gearbox/running gear… What I really would like to see that every bit of this car is photographed, recorded, noted down and preserved for its history.

Meanwhile, only the car knows what it once was like... I like the idea of preserving that sense of mystery!

Posted by: pre67vw - 11 February 2009 15:35:52
Are we talking about a museum piece or a privately owned car? I like the idea of it preserved in a glass case as it is, in a museum - a bit like a piece of a shipwreck on display. But if I owned it privately I'd much prefer it as a restored as close as possible (Kübel chassis etc, no 50's stuff).

Let's face facts; this car is in absolutely awful condition, but by some miracle of fate and enthusiastic Communist-esque modification it has managed to just about survive. In its current condition, it vaguely presents a shadow of its former self with those tantalising VW38 features. I personally believe that it needs to be 'reconstructed' using the original drawings to the best possible standards. OK, it's never going to be an original matching numbers car, but it would be a nice representation (and to some degree interpretation), of a VW38 car.

It is worth saving, but making no bones about the fact that it is possibly the most un original car around!
With what's left you might as well just start from scratch and leave that one next to it!
I would have to disagree Malc. There are important features remaining on this car such as the decklid, decklid support brackets and prop, 80% of the bonnet, doors, and probably 50% of the shell which are truly unique and which mostly didn't survive on the other VW38 (#003). I think what remains needs to be conserved and used as the basis of a reconstruction.

If this turns out to be what it's thought to be,it is probably one of the best VW finds in my lifetime. I would have been happy to find and mount, on my garage wall, the decklid alone. For me, this is the tragedy of a restoration which simply eradicates any indication of the car's past life. The beauty (if any!) of this wreck is that the precious and unique parts stand out amidst what's been added over the years.

Posted by: Bjoern - 18 February 2009 15:53:37
If I read all these worldwide discussion about the quality of a potential restauration of that car, I understand all these people who hide their rarest cars and didn't show it in public until it is finished. If you think about how much of an vintage Bugatti, Horch or charged Mercedes is original of if you think that pictures of the body were published - put not the rest of the parts which might exist the VW38 has a good potentional.

Ultimately the whole discussion is getting a little pointless. If the car has reached it's final resting place, the owner/restorer isn't going to ask your or (rather surprisingly) my opinion on what or how it should be done. If it were mine I would decide myself what should be done and then find the right people to do it. I certainly wouldn't be reading forum posts about the morality of whether it should be done or not. I've got a feeling that's what will happen...it's a no win situation because there will always be people who will be appalled at the decision he makes. But I say just do it and F**k 'em all.

Thank you again Undis for the wonderful pictures. I hope your trip goes well at the weekend. The latest batch of pics show that this car is truly unique in its construction. Wouldn't it be nice to find some evidence of a body number on the car!??

I've watched The Samba topic from day two but recently it's just got repetitive between, should it be fully restored or should it be left as it was found. OK, I was bored so I broke silence and posted a polite, "can't you STFU"...now they posting about whether they sould have the right to voice their opinion. Looks like I shot myself in the foot.:?

  That's the problem with forum's, people think they've got to say something even when there's nothing to say!

Some has just suggested there should be a poll...should he/shouldn't he. FOR PITY'S SAKE NOOOOOOO!

Posted by: pre67vw - 09 March 2009 10:40:46
Maybe we should have a poll, to decide whether or not there should be a poll on the Samba?
Maybe we should have a poll, to decide whether or not there should be a poll on the Samba?
I was going to suggest...just to make it worthwhile they could poll what colour too.

I think the rear window in what's left of this VW is from a Fiat 500 – yuk:!: If so, there's at least one good reason to lose this car or restore it (which is a bit like restoring a shirt from two halves of a broken button) :? The person responsible for this sheet metal butchery forgot to fit the larger 1965 on Beetle side windows to complete the 'modern look'. The excitement of finding this car would be like being told there's a 1947 Beetle dumped in the local field, followed by the complete disappointment of getting to it to find it has been totally fitted out with 1303 body parts, windows and a golf engine stuck in the back. But then this poor old '38 would have been better off with such a conversion

Like the guys that fall over themselves to point out the non-original parts on a car, while they drive some POS or worse still just lock the car in the garage for 20 years.

Anyway...what colour do you think it should be.?

I like dark grey myself, but I think it has to be black as it seems the 38's were. Get rid of that awful back window and windscreen as a priority then it'll look only half as bad. Expect a later split window clip can be modified to match the original '5 rib' style. Well that's how I'd start, then looking more like an old VW would give me the incentive to do the real nasty and expensive stuff
What about a poll on wether or not you should be allowed to make jokes about a poll about the colour?
Thanks James...I needed a reminder that sometimes when you post a STFU...they go on to debate endlessly whether they should STFU or not. Don't bother to ask me to STFU...I have finished on this topic...for today.

I was referring to the Dicks that pick a car to pieces for non original parts. When you get really OLD birthdays are a GOOD thing to have! BTW, I think if you want to preserve the non-VW bits, then make posters showing it or make a replica as it was when it was found, or have a book of the progress photos of the resto'. But by all means, restore the VW as perfectly as it can be. ps Is that colour or color? How about a poll? These polls are taxing! pps I call dibs on/reserve for me the next VW38, VW39, VW30 barn-find that is in good, recognizable condition!
Like birthdays ?
