I would like to add to this list: VVS 203 - '56 Standard Oval in olive drab, see the thread Army Oval I managed to track down the second and third owner, but have not found the current owner yet. Who knows where VVS 203 is today? Thanks!

TYJ 970 is in E.Sussex (I drove past it this afternoon!!!). XDD 521 was purchased in recent years and slammed (search RW forum for more details). Don't know where MTR 900 is now, but I remember the story about it being 'unrestored' as being a bit questionable at the time. I think Chris Clarke still has MCG 120.

Posted by: 48REME - 21 June 2010 12:42:30
ULN 444 used to belong to a man called Anthony Ripley who lived in Chiswick, West London. That, I remember from around 1991/92 as I lived close by at the time. MTR 900 belonged to Alf Lilley in Stoke on Trent, again around the early 90s. MCG 120 was a homemade Chris Clarke RHD conversion.

XDD521 got cal-looked. I last saw it bouncing around the middle lane of the M6 at 50mph about 3 years ago.
Don't know where MTR 900 is now, but I remember the story about it being 'unrestored' as being a bit questionable at the time
It's totally true Rich. I remember 20 odd years ago when Dave Cantle from the HVWOC found it. It really was a never driven in winter, never restored, never welded and never repainted car. Always remember Dave saying he bought it from the owner's son who was never allowed in the car with his shoes on. The owner kept a record of every journey made, every time he put petrol in it and so on and it was so original the paint had been taken down to the primer near the Wolfsburg crest where the owner had polished it so much. Of course it wouldn't be done today but for me it was ruined after Dave sold it - what with the addition of whitewalls, fender skirts, other accessories and I believe some repainting.
PLJ 738 - Polar silver '54
This one was built by John Devereux from SCS fame in Bournemouth. It made the trip to Camberg in '91 and was recently seen in the car park at either Plymfest or Run to the Sun - can't remember which now in the same condition as when John built it.
I believe some repainting.
That's because, if my memory serves me well, some nasty jealous concours entrant at VW action scratched the whole side of the car in revenge, when they didn't win. I think it was around 1992. I remember seeing the damage, it was terrible. Alf Lilley was gutted and was never to be seen again with the car. It probably changed ownership after that.

Looking at it now, it's difficult to believe that I used to drive it up and down the M1 everyday, in and out of London loaded with cable and tools (I was an electrician). It was a great car and I was sorry to part with it but let it go in order to buy a very smart '73 1300, which I duly wrote off about a month later on the A600 just south of Bedford. Beaky is now owned by a member of the HVWOC, but I haven't been able to contact him so have no idea what shape it is now in. Maybe one day we'll meet again... Mike ps. that's me at the wheel!

MDL 179, was purchased by my father from a freind of his, we were led to believe it was the first non import rhd oval to be sold on the isle of man, my dad stripped the car and sold it back to his friend who did nothing with it, it was then purchased by my brother who is a classic car restorer who restored it and sold it about 15 years ago, have seen it around since for sale and at shows, still have as couple of bits for it, also i have seen the owner was trying to sell the reg off it.

Posted by: Rattletrap - 12 January 2011 18:47:26
TLE 70 a metallic light blue oval, may still be with the VW dealer in Norwich, 'Robinsons'. Back in the '80s it was still in their showroom. They kept it there after getting it back from the original owner in the 1970s who they originally sold it to new. MDR 155 was light green, a 1956 oval. I owned it for a year or so in the early '90s. No idea who has it now though.:?
Found these old photos on Volkszone SXW55 ESV451
SXW55- I remember this one from many years ago. It used to belong to Billy Black (I might have got that name wrong, my memory's pretty cr*p these days), who owned an independent VW repair garage called Volksway, in Rutherglen, Glasgow, back in the early 80s. I recall seeing that car in there at the time, it must have been one of the first splits I'd ever seen "in the flesh". I think he was restoring it at the time. No idea where it is now though :(

Think your memory is OK Dave, that all tallys with what you told me approx 10 years ago. ESV 451 was featured in Lawrence Meredith's "Original Beetle" fully restored,i remember it being for sale, about a month after buying the other Sheffield based split,"KET",which we have both owned in our time.If i'd have been shopping a month later i would probably have purchased ESV and kept it, and if circumstances had gone this way,we would probably never have met:cry: Asked the original question as i'd wondered where ESV had gone.No response from the Prof 'tho,is this the only U.K based Split he has lost track of:wink:
801AXF - White Cabrio
This photo of 801 AXF is from Bodiam Castle 1982, next to my kabrio 587 NKX :) I was given the photo when I bought the kabrio. A virtually identical photo in black and white was in an article in VolksWorld in Aug2009. From the article, both cars were then owned by Eddie Butler ( show organiser on behalf of The Split Club )and his partner Fran Spinks. They were credited as a '60 sedan and 58 kabrio, but the Kab' ia a May 1960 car. Does anyone know what time of year that Bodiam show would have been, as the previous owner to 587 NKX bought it on the 15th August 1982, and he lived in Maidstone - I wonder if he saw it at the show !?! If anyone has any details for 587 NKX, Eddie Butler, or Fran Spinks I'd love to have them, thanks. Tony

Hello Tony I was at Bodiam in 1982, I have a feeling it was at the beginning of the summer, maybe May time? I'll see if there was any mention of it in the VW Motoring Mags of the time. It was a great event, very intimate. There were lots of great cars there like yours and many 50s beetles still being used as every day transport. I had a very original, 3 owner 1954 Oval then (RNC 676)that I was using everyday, I put it up for sale at the show as I was in the process of buying a 1970 1500 June Beetle. I sold the Oval to Jerry Ashplant for £120, those were the days. Last I heard it was being restored by a guy in Storrington, but that was in about 1985 and I've not seen or heard anything of it since then. I wonder if it's still in some lock up somewhere? Eddie Butler I believe was a friend of Bob Shail's, Bob is still very much about so he might be able to help you contact Eddie. Mike

Hello All, I can report that SSU 658 is still alive and well. It is still in my ownership and is currently residing in my garage at my parents smallholding in North Lincolnshire :) The last time it was out and about on the road was in 1997! It has since just lived stored in the garage, taken out for a run around the grounds of the smallholding every other month or so, washed and put back. It's still pretty much in the same condition as when I showed it back in the early nineties, (with the exception of needing a brake overhaul and new tyres as they have cracked up with age!) before I drifted away from the VW scene, . I'm actually planning to recommission it and have it back road legal this October :) The cars actual build date was May 7th 1955, it's a RHD UK supplied car. Since restoration in 1989 it has been finished in Zenith Blue. When I originally aquired it back in 1984, it was finished (very badly!) in a non VW maroon colour. It was originally Polar Silver. I'm currently trying to decide if I should consider selling it. If anyone has pictures of it at any of the shows I was at in 1990, I'd love to see them. Kind regards, Paul Newman

Not a UK vehicle, but I was having a chat with a VW friend the other night, and the subject of Ulf Kjaiser and his accessorized 1956 Jungle Green Oval, CLZ 311 came up. Has anyone seen the car, know it's whereabouts, or if Ulf is still active. I saw the car at the Scottish VW Festival back in the early 1990's, and I think Ulf had brought it to the UK to visit as many shows as he could. Volksworld featured it around this time too. Interestingly enough Rattletrap was at the same show the year before while still in the ownership of Tony Levy, and it's still around!:d Gavin

MOL 179 polar silver ragtop. I remember this from the mid 90s. Did a search and found this old Bug Jam video, fast forward to about 31 mins... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Hrvf-gigBQ I actually thought it was a polar silver 56/57 with red interior ( the same as the car I'm restoring ), but watching the video it's actually a 53-55 in later colour scheme! Anyone seen it recently?

its in Ireland mate! and still about, photos of it in a recent volksworld now on empi 5's with an irish number plate. the car was originally found in a garage in Stratford-upon-Avon.
its in Ireland mate! and still about, photos of it in a recent volksworld now on empi 5's with an irish number plate. the car was originally found in a garage in Stratford-upon-Avon. When the camera goes past the interior I'm sure you can see straight gearstick, batwing and ribbed doors. Might be wrong the video aint exactly high quality! I'll have to dig my old Volksworlds out now to check.

I thought it was MDL 179, not MOL 179. Isle of Wight car originally and spent a lot of years in near Birmingham (Bromsgrove perhaps?). It changed hands about three years ago. Rob- it was a different one that was found in Stratford- that was TOL 660 which I was offered a few years back but turned it down. It's now owned by somebody named Russell in West Yorks.

Yep it was MDL 179 and would of been a Fishbourne Garage Isle of Wight car, I don't know the exact date when Fishbourne started trading as a VW franchise but i'm guessing this could of been one of their first cars. I'm not sure when it was messed with as it looks pretty much stock in the video.

Yep realised it was MDL not MOL when I got the Volksworld out last night. December 1995 and it's on the cover. I was right it's a 55 so 3 fold ragtop.
I believe ULN 444 is still in West London.
ULN444 is now in Esher, 'Otis' (as he's otherwise known) is absolutely charming and very well indeed, (just completed a comprehensive service from Ian Kent at E's Autos - who was fantastic). See you all at Volksworld Show...

TOL was originally sold by Black and White in Harvington just up the road from stratford, then later found nearer to Bham.

TOL 660 was found in Wychbold. Cheers, Rob.

Hello everyone, eventually I find myself here after a such long time trying to trace my childhood 54 beetle! The reg appears below, PLJ 738. She was our beloved bug from 1975-84ish.I was very interested in cars as a child, and as a teenager my father and I stripped the now dilapidated bug down to rebuild. My parents split a while after and PLJ was left in the garage gathering dust. Soon after, Mum sold the beetle on for around £250 to a lovely guy who wanted to restore her fully. T Im pretty sure this man must have been John Deveraux, as the bug appears fully restored by John in the book by Nigel Grimshaw 'The Volkswagen Beetle'. I would dearly love to find out how our old beetle is doing, the net hasn't been helpful up until now! I'll post a picture, I still have one of the original keys. The only disappointing thing is that the in the few pictures I have of her, her number plate is off :0(

Funny that this should pop up as recently I found a classified ad for the car in Safer Motoring from the 1980's, I shall try and take a copy. It's nice to see someone else from the Island on here and feels the same about bringing DL cars back home.

This happened to a 65 I had that went to the C.I. and came back.

That's Correct What Martin Has Just Said ...... The Car Will Keep Its Original UK Number !
Anyone knows this car FTM 594
Yes, I know the history of that car. I believe it got scrapped in the 1960s. That photograph above was taken in the mid-1950s. The picture below was taken in 1961 after it had been resprayed and 'modernised' a bit...
Anyone knows this car FTM 594
"April 11th 1956 Near Priddy on the Mendip Hills, North Somerset. My Dad's 1946 Volkswagen Sedan bought the previous day for £255 from Messrs. Coventry and Jeffs of Clifton, Bristol. Originally built by the British Army personnel in Wolfsburg as they restarted the factory, it was bought by a UK Army Colonel who brought it back home to Luton in Bedfordshire in September 1947 when it was first UK registered. It was Dark Blue and had been given "Castle Earth" side panels..a mid green/grey colour...with grey vinyl seat upholstery rather than the standard cloth. It also had been fitted with a new 1192cc engine in 1953 and then sold to a Mr Knapman of Saltford near Bristol. This was the first car that my Dad kept..he had previously bought an Austin 7 Ruby which was so dreadful it went after a month and Austin Big 6 which lasted just a day! We kept "Volks" until April 30th 1962 and during that year we did effectively a total restoration of everything but also did do "upgrades" which now of course we would think dreadful..the full VW chrome set, carpets, luggage cover, new bumpers, painted the seats with "Nuagain" blue paint because the original vinyl made your clothes go black!! and worst of all, cut the dashboard to fit a loudspeaker for the 1950 HMV radio set. I still have the cut out piece of steel..argh! Sadly..we sold it for £125 as a trade in for a 1954 Morris Oxford Series II (SHY 214) which was a bad move as it done 255,000 miles and the side cills turned out to be marked "Vono"...(Bedstead Manufacturers for you young ones!) It's a long story but our VW links began in 1950 and continued in various ways until 1994 so split window VW's and 1954 Microbus's were a big part of my early motoring experience. There are dozens of stories but for now, I hope you like the picture..I'll post more soon." This is all from a guy called Richard Leaman.

Hi All, I can't believe it's been around 2 years since I last posted on here! Anyway, a little update on SSU 658. I've finally got the time to re-commission her now! Started in earnest today with a good clean and polish. She's held up pretty well since I restored her in 1989... So she's getting a new set of boots. Along with this will be a full brake overhaul, and ermm... well that's pretty much it apart from a usual standard service, greasing & lots more polishing everywhere :) I'll be seeing you all at Stanford Hall for the first time in 25 years !!

I owned MDL 179 from about 1994 to 1997 including when it was featured in VolksWorld magazine. I was sitting with it at Stanford Hall when Ivan from the magazine told me he wanted to feature it! A very exciting day! It was a 1955 car so had the ribbed doors, straight gear stick and the bat wing wheel. It also had motometer gauges too! I bought it from a girl in her late 20s who lived in Tiddington just outside Stratford Upon Avon for £4750 in 1994. It was in great condition, just the engine tinware was a bit ratty, the seat frames and steering wheel in need of restoration and the wheels were a bit sorry. It had radials with white wall flaps squeezed in them! That's how it appeared in that Bug Jam video. Wow, the 90's fashion looks pretty distinct! I had the wheels redone in cream with beauty rings and propper white wall crossplys fitted. Changed the US Spec bumpers for Euro. The had seat frames powder coated (One of them was in poor condition though, did anyone ever replace them?) and the steering wheel resprayed. I cleaned the engine up and freshened the tinware with a lick of paint. It had major inner quarter welding done under the rear seat just before I sold it. We ended up using plate under the battery pan, I always hated the fact it wasn't a pressed piece! I think it would have been due some front heater channel work soon after? I sold it on in 1997 for around £4200! It wasn't easy to sell either! I had a lot of time wasters! I wonder what it's worth now had I kept it? The guy who bought it was a real enthusiast. Young lad who owned the white mid sixties bug that had just about every accessory fitted! I have a pile of pictures in a folder somewhere that I'll have to dig out.

Hey Guiddy… that young lad was me!!! Now 50… thought we were about the same age no??…. Had been wondering about this car along with my own, mine was a 58, not mid 60s, and yes very accessorised LOL… I bought yours with the intention to swap every over you MDL - the 1776, 3.88 box, the accessories and lower it! Never got round to it and it was taking up space in my parents garage in Kent. So sold it a year later. Would so love to have that back now, I also say that about my 58, but can’t keep everything. At the time of selling my 58 ( can you believe for a bloody people carrier as had growing family at that point), I’d already bought a project 62 Dormobile which I was fully restoring so selling the bug didn’t feel as bad. Funny that MDL ended up in Ireland, I’ve lived in Northern Ireland since 2002!
