| I had been keeping it quiet, but the cat is out of the bag now! The car is the 1952 Kab which was restored by Rheinhold Plank in Italy between '95 and '97 for an old friend of mine called Sean Geddes. Sean lives in Italy and only gets back to the UK for about two weeks of the year, so the car had only done about 800 Kilometres since the restoration was completed in 1997. The last time it was used was 2002 - as Sean couldn't get it started and didn't have time to get it looked at - but had worked out it wasn't getting fuel at the carb. So, the car just sat in a lock-up until about three months ago. I spoke to Sean in February and he told me he wanted to sell the car as he wanted to buy a house on Sardinia. He was also put his just completed - and 1st class 1951 356 up for sale - and that sold very quickly through Maxted Page - see a pic here; https://www.maxted-page.com/cars/default.aspx Anyway, about three months ago Sean and I met up to see what the car was like now. It needed a fair bit of work! The fuel system needed to be totally gone through. The fuel had gone off turned to a brown tar like substance. This was in the fuel tank, the reserve tap, the fuel lines, pump and carb. I spent 27 hours alone cleaning the tank out. The problem was made a lot worse by the fact the tank had been lined with a rubberized tank liner and when I used acetone to loosen the petrol it loosened the liner too! A total nightmare! The clutch was useless so the engine had to come out, the brake system needed a total rebuild (tried getting a rebuild kit for 16mm wheel cylinders lately? Thanks to the help of George Lloyd who supplied me with a rear wheel cylinder and was in on the fact the car was going to be coming back out of hiding). The wiper switch had mysteriously decided to self-destruct (Thanks to David Butterfly in California who gave me a NOS switch!). The electrical system had to be gone through - just from sitting around for so long too. My good friend Carl Maher sorted out the mechanical work - he's got a 1952 Sedan - the goal being to get the car to VW Action. Webster and Lancaster in Watford got the job of detailing it. The car had been sitting for so long the paint had gone very flat, all the exterior trim had gone off and the underside needed three days work to get it back to 'concours'. It was right up to the wire - I collected the car on Friday and drove straight to VW Action. Only a couple of people knew it was likely to be at the show. I did not want to enter it in to the show as I am not interested and I don't think it looks good if the bloke from the magazine wins an award, but the organisers were very insistent - so I agreed as they wanted to display the car in the main marquee so people could have a good look at it. Anyway, they stitched me right up as they got me to hand out the awards and then when it came to the Best of Show 'Europe's Most Beautiful Beetle' award they awarded it to the Kabriolett. I wasn't expecting it, and it floored me! I wasn't happy I'd been stitched up, but I was happy that the car had one as it is a great piece of work by all involved. Oh, and it didn't miss a beat all weekend. But then, it is a Volkswagen! P.S. Rich, you were right! :-) |

Colour scheme is Karmann correct. |

| Thanks for the write up Ivan. Got a real beauty there. Say - any chance I can get some mags with my car in! All I ever got was a torn open empty envelope. The only copy I have seen was a coffee(?) stained one, that I stole from Funky Pete. |

George would rather have had the decklid vent trims. If we have any copies left here in the office - NO PROBLEM James! I will check. |

| seen this at action a very nice car with alot of cool parts on it especially the wing beading and vert decklid trims i dont see any problem with a employe of a magazine winning a award if the cars good enough as this clearly was it should get a award and i`m sure most would agree with this wish it was in my garage (but lowered and narrowed  ) |

However, I'm glad he got stitched up and won the award  It's great when a STOCK early VW wins an award regardless of the owner!! Add into it the fact that Ivan does so much to help the hobby (and always champions the stock cause equally as much as others) I don't think this car could be in better hands (except mine)  8) |

That coupled with the fact it's only about an hour away from my home. Actually, scratch that... it's more like and hour and a half in the kab! :-) |

If the interest in old VWs dies so does his job, which provides him with the means, (like seen elsewhere on this forum with other 'enthusiasts'), to open his wallet and get the VW he wants.
The stock/vintage part of the hobby is tiny compared to the number of enthusiasts who like lowered/cal-look/drag race/beach buggies and looking at the size of events such as bug jam and VW action it doesn't look like interest is dying off at all - Ivan could easily neglect the stock fans and still have a popular magazine and make his living, yet in each issue of Volksworld there is a stock feature car, Bob Shaills column and Retro stuff from Peter Noad. Also shows like Hessisch and Camberg get good covereage in the mag, not just a single page write up. So I'd say he does champion the stock side of the hobby as much as the others, now he even owns a stock vintage VW as well - surely a good sign! However... This doesn't allow me to open my wallet and get what I want. If only!! Years and years of hard work, ducking and diving, saving and a very understanding bank manager is what it takes. I've always been into Vintage VWs, and owned plenty from Ovals, Lowlights and many stock 60's six volters along with a lovely Crew Cab and a stock 21 window. 20 years ago, I couldn't have even dreamed that one day I'd own the car being discussed here. But I've made it happen for myself and I'm over the moon. I knew the car before it was restored, I made sure it was featured in 1998 and I ALWAYS dreamed of owning it. Ask Sean how many times I told him I'd love to own it over the years. I kept it quiet about owning it, as I know there's a large element of our little world that would immediately think 'cheque book' and obviously, I didn't want to be tarred with that brush. I've always been admired people with really lovely VWs - especially a Rometsch, Heb or Schwimmer, but I don't look at them and think they own them because they haven't earned the right. I'd rather see someone who has gone all out to own the car of their dreams and for it to be a VW. I'll never point a negative finger in their direction. Oh, and by the way - Last Truimph's thread is cool - I am sure I commented as such on the thread. And, as I have said earlier in this thread, after 8 years in a lock-up, the Kab shared many of the same problems. And much though I tried, I couldn't get it back on the road in time for Peppercorn! Thanks for the kind words. |

| Congrats what a great car. Be nice to see it not get cal-plebbed. "not enough vintage vws attend action" There are 2 obvious answers to that one, one starts with Brian and the other ends in Pod  To everyone else from me, dont forget that stock does'nt come any more honest and less turncoat than Standard Split and Ovaltine, and they have been around vws longer than the majority and this is a stock forum so they are entitled to their opinion as much as the rest of us in my view. |

And that's coming from someone who's favourite shows are Lavenham, Peppercorn, H.O. etc.... I used to hear all the stories about people breaking into tents and yobs in transits at Bug Jam and the like, but this seemed to be a completely different type of show. Back on topic: Having dug out the original Volksworld feature (from an issue where the feature cars were all stock), something I didn't remember was the car had nodding semaphores. I'm sure I've read that semaphores that 'nod' are from emergency vehicles - is this true, and does that mean the semaphores on this car are from an emergency services split or early oval cab? |

| What a lot of pathetic rubbish has now flooded into this thread. The one sensible response is from the guy himself, Ivan. He acknowledges my observations, no nastyness or rubbish remarks. I take my hat off to his professionalism. It is his livelihood, and he agrees that it is in his personal interest to promote our hobby. Okay the wallet remark may be a little harsh as he has to earn his money (nice way to do it though!), but he is fortunate nonetheless. Some however do just seem to get what they want then act the big I am on these forums, thinking they are the top of the tree. My first ever post on pre67vw regarding 'Standard Tw*t' on the Rattletrap thread is an example. It is obvious that outside his job that Ivan loves old VWs, although I'd not consider him a regular stock purist with originality, though this new car is a collector's gem. I cant but wonder if he has a set of earlies waiting in his garage though. To the people that have said that they won't normally post on the forums because of whatever, well left to you there would be no forums. Adult sensible discussion, some strong disagreements too, I dislike crawlers myself though many here indulge in that activity. Stock die-hards admittedly dont have the best skills at forum use I agree, as they dont waste all their time on forums/online like young people do, but they are still valuable contributors regardless of their opinions, and certainly far more interesting for me than playing the 'who's who in the vw scene buddy list game' that seems to go on an awful lot |

|
What a lot of pathetic rubbish has now flooded into this thread.
You started it [-x
To the people that have said that they won't normally post on the forums because of whatever, well left to you there would be no forums.
Really? So it's down to people like you that we have forums? Well I'd just like to say a big thanks for all your hard work...
I dislike crawlers myself though many here indulge in that activity.
I wouldn't say I know Ivan but I first crossed paths with him in the Grundman VW museum at Hessisch Oldendorf where he was obviously very knowledgeable and enthusiastic about vintage VWs. But lets see if I get this right, here is a guy who puts regular vintage features in his magazine, travels long distances to visit foreign vintage shows and museums, now owns his own vintage VW - but if I say I think he likes vintage VW's then I'm a crawler? Anyway I have nothing to gain from Ivan by crawling, what's it going to get me a free subscription?
As for this guy, sounds like his garden should be excavated
Leave his garden alone. Seriously.  now PLEASE... Can we leave all of this b*ll*cks out and get back to talking about VWs? |

It hasn't been out of family ownership since new and this will be the first time it's seen outside of Ireland. | The snobbery of this site really takes the biscuit. My mum used to work in a large music archive, her boss was so snobby about the records and gold disks that the archive held that she did not want to show anyone round or let anyone in.Might as well not have existed. I don't care who owns a VW, when I see a nice VW there is always a part of me that is jealous, I admit it, but it doesnt screw me up or make me bitter. What I'd love to see are some close ups of the detail of the car, the sort of pictures that would never make volksworld because they are too specific. I personally want something new in volksworld, like beetles being used for everyday, how they fair and how to keep the rust at bay from practical experience. My car is a 67 1500, I built it and love driving it all year round, a vintage buff may pick it apart but I really have better things to do with the car.......like drive it |

I think you need to look back at all of your posts, not just on this thread but others as well and see what your contribution to the forum has been. Take a look at how much practical advice you've given and how many people have appreciated your comments, then take a look at how many comments have been negative or intending to stir up an argument, or are just plain rude, then hopefully you might understand why you were banned and why you're headed that way again. I would generally rather see posts about modified cars than any of your posts. I suggest that you post up a few photos of your car, so we can see what a perfect car should be. And in future, remember this little tip - if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all
Well said Rob  I've been following this thread for a while now and been amazed at the total B****hit that has been posted by one induvidaul about Ivan's car  First of all I have nothing to gain by so called "brown nosing" Ivan, I have known him for over 15 years and I can tell you he wasn't born with a silver spoon in his mouth and has worked very hard for what he has. It is also true that he has wanted to buy this car for many years. Is that a crime wanting a Split Kab then? Whether he paid cash for his Kab or got a bank loan, is that really anyones business except his. That really is a nice car he has, I knew the car from way back when, when Shaun first did the resto job, back then it was much more difficult to find the parts as there wasn't all the companies producing top repro parts...... I guess from all your derogatory remarks that you too would like a split, but due to the current market prices of these cars has put them out of most peoples price range within the hobby, you included.....or maybe you have a "special one" all us Split boys don't know of  Like in your signature "The way to end a good day out with your Split is with an Ovaltine!" well I would personally like to see a picture of your "special" split you drive before your Ovaltine. Hell I'll even get Herr Dokotor to send you an invite to the Cannonball Challenge so you can put your money were your keyboard is  But then again I guess your just happy to stay behind your keyboard mouthing off....... |

|
I'll try to put this as politely as possible. I think you need to look back at all of your posts, not just on this thread but others as well and see what your contribution to the forum has been. Take a look at how much practical advice you've given and how many people have appreciated your comments, then take a look at how many comments have been negative or intending to stir up an argument, or are just plain rude, then hopefully you might understand why you were banned and why you're headed that way again. .... And in future, remember this little tip - if you can't say something nice then don't say anything at all
In reply to your post: I've had nothing but praise for threads like 55 Kab's resto, Last Triumph's Oval re-comission and Robb's 67 1500 restoration. It was I who defended the late Tony Levy amid the untrue, unfair bad comments made against him by 'enthusiasts' here. I doubt that his car will be displayed at Lavenham (unless guarded 24) because of a threat posted by a member here, I quote that post: 'will take his action when Rattletrap's at Lavenham'. This site was then closed-down and the threat deleted. I've made posts offering advice and asking questions – you've just not read them. As far as Ivan's car thread is concerned, I was not criticising Ivan, indeed I remarked on his professionalism with his replies. There's no attempt by me to 'stir it up', a few people here seem unable to take criticism. I love my old Bug, but its a 1970 and a scruffy one at that, its certainly far from perfect. It would be very easy just to post rude personal comments or post bad language, but I've just expressed personal views, it is a forum isn't it? If you read my posts properly then you'll see that I've not made comments against Ivan or his (was his?) smashing car. I DID think he'd either flip it or lower it. It's his car and his property to do whatever with, although I hate the idea of vintage Beetles for gain, it keeps many of us out because of spiralling prices. Ivan did not begin this ridiculous thread, this is all here through no fault of his. If you'd read through properly you'd see that I sympathised with him and shared his embarrassment. You will also note that I am certainly not alone in my criticism of this thread. Current market prices for Splits are beyond the reach of many of us. Most are abroad anyway, and the few here are recent imports from Sweden. A split with a long stretch of UK history is one I would like, but they're like hen's teeth. Rattletrap turned up for sale at an amazing price for such a famous UK car. I love this car a lot, I have such fond memories of Rattletrap at shows in the 1970s-80s with Tony Levy, but it sold within hours to Standardsplit who just opened his wallet, and who already owns a Split. Its very frustrating. 'us Split boys', you say, well that sums up the whole thing for me, – I'm not one of the gang, in the group. What about girls, Mrs Herbie has at least two split windows. |

You should be aware that I've had several requests to just permanently ban you for stirring up trouble, so if you're here to make some VW friends then something is going wrong somewhere. If you're not... leave. I also don't know why you keep bringing up past arguments, they're gone, deleted and we've moved on - I suggest you do the same. Personally if I was to write a list of the top 100 VWs I'd like to see, Rattletrap wouldn't be on it, but if that car means something to you then get in touch with the owner and go have a look at it. |
