I have recently started some work on my 1953 Sunroof beetle but thought i would start the thread with photos of the first restoration done by Steve Parker back in 1989.Steve told me he bought the car after seeing an Autotrader ad .The car had been layed up since the 70s but didnt know much more .I did find out that the car was first registered by a Mr Harris in Cheshire with the original reg of TFM 794. Please remember that back in the 80s panels for early cars were difficult to find and without the internet for reference there were few rescources available .I think Steve did a great job of restoring this car to stock especially as most people at the time were cal looking anything they could get there hands on.(me included). I have scanned some of his resto photos before i start mine as a bit of background to the car. ^^^ Nice photos Mike, tks for posting. Didn't realise the body was as bad as that! So what's next? Any chance of getting the OG plate back?

I did meet Steve at Stanford over a year ago and he has the nunber on his subaru .He did mention selling it but it was too much .I would like it of course although i dont consider the reg number being an original part to any car . Like so many UK cars its no stranger to filler as the next pictures will show .Good thing is the filler has preserved it quite well .I have only started stripping back a few suspect places but i will let the pics do the talking.I,ll post later as i am bidding on a new grinder .Last one blew up when i was using a wire wheel to strip back the filler

I had a few hours to spare over the holiday and decided to assess the front end .I had noticed a few bubbles and lumps and i was expecting some remedial rust repairs .After owning many VWs i have learned to expect the worst and anything better is a bonus as the next photos show .Anyone who has seen my car maybe surprised . I started looking at the front quarter and stripped back heaps of filler. Not looking too good And the lower repair panel removed.Looks like i'll be starting this from the ground up..But at least some of the original panel is there . Moving onto the front valence and spare wheel well its the same story. And with filler and patch removed Here is a comparison of the original valance from the first restoration and you can see that the top part of the original four finger valence still remained underneath the replacment panel. From first restoration. Valence cut off to reveal its still there Lots of work ahead and think Stanford hall maybe of the cards this year :(

Once the valence had been removed i noticed some over smooth areas above the spare wheel tray.I used the wire wheel to remove most of the filler and underneath was what appears to be an attempt to chisel a panel off. This must have been left and just covered in filler as the pictures show. No worries though ,it will all be sorted :d I am hoping someone can help me find a rhs front quarter or parts of to help get the old girl back to some kind of condition.I am looking at wolfs for the front valence and wheel well panel. Thanks Mike

Mike
i wouldnt stress, for most of the restos ive read abt from the late 80s filler was everybodys friend.some years on we all see early cars as much more precious and want to do a factory correct job, this will gain much more admirers than simply ignoring any issues its nice to have such a good set of photos to look back on,at least you know what areas to start on first by browsing pics as you have done  si

It certaily is useful having the photos so it wasnt too much of a surprise as the photos didnt tally with what was under the car.I initially started it because i had bought a 4 tab bonnet which wouldnt fit because the front apron had been welded in to match the repro bonnet that was used at the time.I have had a good few years driving it and going to a few shows and still have my 66 to drive for the summer. Photos show that most of the inner hearter channel (L/H)is original, though i have'nt started with the wire wheel on this side . Looks like the rear quarter repair was attached without cutting anything away before hand so this could be a plus. The excellent restorations we sometimes see carried out are still the exception, most of the "restos" documented on various VW forums are just as bad as what went on 20 years ago. It's just that people are too scared to say so, for fear of getting jumped on by the "grate job m8!!!!" know-nowts. Anyway, enough negative rambling - bring on the good stuff.

Some small updates but no repair work yet .I am still sorting out my garage as i have not restored a car since moving over 10 years ago .Having been used to a double garage, going to a single means extra work trying to find space to put stuff as i take it off. I have had to be i little inventive and construct a frame to lift the body .Well actually its some shelving i got from work as it was damaged . Body will be coming on and off the pan a few times so i did a trial lift today .Also made removing the engine a doddle. Winding back the clock a few weeks here are more panels uncovered with more surprises underneath. Bondo beach  Door pillar looking quite solid and original ,as is most of the heater channel for the left side. Right of the car is typically worse for a right handed car and although the door pillar is original the channel has had a cover panel fitted to the section between the posts.I have yet to uncover this bit as i want to brace the car first. Some more pictures of the Disassembly . The thing i love about this car ,the sunroof ,Now coming off .I have never removed one before but it was'nt too tricky to work out .It still has the leather slider pieces intact but there are some repairs needed to replace some captive nuts underneath. Its amazing just how big that hole is on a 3 fold once you get the roof out. This hole in the roof liner is where the car had some lodgers over a winter lay up. Several moustraps removed them but the damage was done ,and the roof liner had to be removed .Here is the nest complete with mouse near the rear window. Some parts packed way .I have kept a book of where everthing is as i know i will forget when it comes to put things back. Tar board removed and all is well . Sound pillows are intact but i need to remove them to inspect as i can see brown staining . Only just noticed that the left side has had a small bump in the past .Picture doest show up to well but there is a small crease here. Battery drill makes easy work of removing the bolts to remove the body. Here is the frame i am using to lift the body as my rackety old shed is not up to hanging anything from. As the 1938 beetle was recently married to its floor, mine is getting a divorce.Certainly makes it easier to remove the engine.I then spent a few hours hiding it in another shed.I will put the body back on after i have made something up to sit the body and floor at a good work height .This should be easier on my knees and I have some extraction to rig up as well as it can get quite dusty in there . Were tin snips hard to come by in the 80ies? Because it seems like nobody ever bothered to trim these hugely oversize repair panels down before fitting them. Now you have giant long lines of weld across the middle of your panels to contend with, when a 3" strip at the bottom would have done the job. Still, the car has survived to fight another day, so I suppose its not all bad.

Nice work.

Not much done in the way of repairs yet but i have uncoverd the rh rear quarter repair Much the same as the left really. The rear bumper bracket stripped of filler .This has also uncovered what looks like a minor bump to the rear as there is a crease just above it. I had thought that the rear valence was replaced with the rest of the work done in the 80s ,but based on the next photo i dont think it was .The valence is a 60s item which believe to be a genuine panel. It was attached by some very good brazing and lead loaded to smooth off the join.I am guessing that the valence was replaced after the bump and a long time before it was reworked in the 80s. I went to bugfreeze on a panel hunt mission but came back with nothing but a NOS bonnet badge .I was slightly dissapointed as i saw a front inner wing which i could have used to repair mine .Just as i started looking at it i was informed it was sold  .Its looking like i will be making most of the part panels. Did anyone else go ?i thought it was pretty poor for the restorer. In fact they should rename it Busfreeze as there seemed little in the way of Beetle spares . Tomorrow i shall finish off removing the rear valence as i think its good enough to sell on.I have bought the super nice and perfectly accurate Wolf item .Only downside was i had to purchase a rough genuine panel for the inner part as they dont come with it. Mike

You can't go far wrong with a Wolf rear valance Mike. Same goes for front valance and spare wheel well if you need them. If you need rear bumper mounts then I recommend Hooky's. Post up a list of what you need so we can see where you need help.

A right hand front quarter would be nice even if its a 60s one as i could use it to repair mine. Has anyone used the large rear quarter from heritage ?Its for an early car but i havnt seen one to measure . https://www.vwheritage.com/vw_act_shop.product_pID_116053_lang_EN_country_GB.htm Mike

Hooky makes early bumper mounts Mike (well correct for 55) as Ben used them on mine. I thought the spare wheel well was quite different in shape. For example you've got all those wiring tabs so I reckon in the long run it will cause you less hassle to go with a Wolf item. Give Alex a call at Defcom3 as he did have an early 60's car he was cutting up as he needed metal so may have exactly what you want.

I dont think Mr Hook does make -'60 bumper mounts, but I may be wrong. He makes the early-mid 60's style. I guess the metal behind is the same as 'oval' era, but the mount of definitely not.

cool,i know mike has said hookys does but when i got mine in december he was only doing the slightly later type also mentioned.but my car isnt as specific so i fitted them
You didn't really think Evil Ben would have fitted the wrong style mounts to my car did you :?:
I just wasn't sure if there had been some sort of miscommunication and Ben had actually chucked in some Wolf ones, I've seen all the photos (when the thread was up :( ) and I am very sure he wouldn't have put a foot wrong with the body.

I have had an email saying that he can make the 53-60 ones at a weeks notice ,so i will go with him . Thanks Mike

I had some time today so i finished taking off the 60s valence.Quite satisfying taking it off as it was the one thing i wanted to change from the day i got the car. Next in line were the side trays.I have tried several tools to remove spot welds but most are too big so i still use a 5mm drill.I have to remove these for the bumper mount repair and the left hand one needs some small holes repairing . There is also a small flange underneath the tray to deweld but they come off fairly easy. I need to get them blasted before i start any repairs so in the mean time i separated the inner part of doner H valence ready for the wolf one . This bit also needs blasting and repairs so i called it a day. Took a few pics of the sculptured bumper mounts. Definitly food for thought for anyone checking over a beetle to buy. Nice work drilling the spot welds - it's the only way to do it properly. Nice set of Hooky's bumper mounts will see you right. Are you going to use this as an apportunity to make the rear valance removable?

Yes the removable rear valence will make access to the subaru motor much easier when i go drag racing. :d Just kidding, i am trying get the car back to at least looking original so no mods here . Some pictures of the Wolf front and rear valence .I dont believe he made the dies for these at all ,i am convinced he dug up the original presses as surely nobody puts this kind of detail in panels anymore. Mike, when compared to an original 'H' valence, are the areas circled the same on a Wolf one? Or are they a bit fatter and taller? The back end of the car is in quite good condition really, for a UK car. A bit of rot but nothing too serious. Keep up the good work. 8)
Errr!!! OK Will I'm sure you'll get there Mike, was it expected or a bit of a shock?
Dont get me wrong, it's not in fantastic shape or anything, but most UK cars have layers of patches over rust, this should take a lot less repairing than a lot.
I'm sure you'll get there Mike, was it expected or a bit of a shock?
Some bits were surprising like the chiseling in the front and the front inner wing ,but i could tell from the photos i got with the car that he must have used filler in the bumper mounts and inner wings because they just did'nt match up. In some ways its better he did use filler and not cut out the parts .Now i have uncovered most of old repairs its almost like it was never restored . in the past i have had cars in much worse condition and you do get to the stage where nothing really shocks ,its just another repair and another dent in the bank balance

Posted by: Sunroof53 - 07 March 2011 19:50:51
Its difficult to compare with the original valence i have as it has a lot of paint on .Also the shiny new metal looks a bit different when i photogragh it,but you decide. I'm quite happy with it and theres nothing better out there . There is another manufactuer of these in the UK but the H bit is quite shocking . Nice Project you have there. Those valances do look good - did you try Autocraft here in the UK? The only reason I ask is because I picked up a rear valance for my '59 and it looks spot-on! I've got to make up the weather strip, are you making up your own or is there someone out there knocking them out?

It is hard to understand somtimes why a company goes to such great lengths to reproduce a panel(or anthing for that matter) and get the only bit people actually want it for completely wrong .However ,i could'nt make one and i spent some time as an apprentice doing sheetmetal work . I can see the same problem I had with mine Mike. I don't know how bad your OCD is but to be 100% accurate the bottom of the bumper hanger should be in line with the bottom of the inner wing.

I don't know how bad your OCD is but to be 100% accurate the bottom of the bumper hanger should be in line with the bottom of the inner wing.
OCD has been tempered slightly with age but i dropped the Baby left the wife and had a quick check on my car as it still has part of the original mount there .:d Check the picture There are some dimensional differences but the position of the mount on the panel is good. I need to strip a bit more filler off before i do a sketch to show where the problem is . The lower wing mounting bolt is 5mm too low and the pitch is 4mm too close together .It looks like your mount was moved to align with the bolt holes but i think i will just move the weld nut .It probably would'nt be a problem as there is so much movement in the wing holes. I am busy for a few days but i will do a sketch to clearly show what i mean.I have to say that they are still an exellent panel and very happy with them. Mike

Hi Mike, Could you advise me if yor '53 has aluminium-coated rear light wiring looms? I'm having new looms made up for my Oct '53 & I don't know whether they should be alu-coated or vinyl-coated. Thanks! Anyone else who's got a '53 please also answer here if poss:- https://forums.pre67vw.com/default.aspx?g=posts&t=18061 Sorry to hijack your thread Mike...

All the wiring on my car is pvc ,I think the type you are talking about ended before 53 as i have seen a few zwitters that have pvc also.

Posted by: Sunroof53 - 15 March 2011 20:12:25
As for the bumper mounts i have dissected them as there are sevaral bits that are different .They would probably be ok as they were but both the mount and the wing holes are out of position to what i have on my oval. The mount is also a bit longer than an oval one, but its not a big deal for anyone wanting to buy one .They are still the best ones at the price so i cant complain. When i am not so busy i will do a sketch so its a bit clearer. Mike

Some updates ,I have disected the bumper panels and fitted them but if there is a next time i will go for the wolf ones .I removed the bumper mount from the back panel, welded up all the holes .I then refitted the mount to dimensions i had taken from what was left of the original. Here is what i had before Looking a little better here I have trial fitted the Wolf rear valence and apart from some trimming of the left hand flange(it was longer than the rightside ) it was a suberb fit.Just wish i had splashed out for the bumper mounts to match. This is the inner part of the valence which you have to remove from an original .I had to buy an old apron from a scrapper just to get this part .It needed some work as part of the flange is missing from where it was chiseled off . I just cut some 1mm plate to fill the gap ,weld and smooth off with a flap disc. There is a piece below the flange that is also missing but i dont have a reference to make it . Does anyone have a photo of this bit? Flange welded in but piece below is still missing.:? I have not posted for a while ,but have been doing some small jobs with what time i have had .I havnt finished welding the rear apron yet as i need to get a side tray blasted. In the mean time i did a bit to the front. Here is the little strengthener on the inner wing.Bits like these have a habit of looking ok .its only when you remove bit like these you see what going on underneath. I made a cardboard template and decided it would be easier to make in two bits .I dont have a jenny so its a case of bending with pliers and using whats at hand. I had to cut most of the surrounding material but seemed easier to get this bit in first.I always give the metal a quick grit blast which is what you can see on the left. The piece of angle and the tie rod was to pull the left inner wing over but i'll come to that later. As i did some of this a while ago i need to sort some pictures of it finished but here is one of a small repair to the left side which also needed the strengthener.I made the piece to follow the contour of the old one just using snips and a file. A few updates. Not much I'm afraid but progress all the same. Inner wing return lip welded with some finishing left to do. The car has had a bump in the past which had bent the reinforcement panel .it was hardly noticeable but I had trouble getting the bonnet to sit central between the inner wings .i ended up having to remove it which also meant I could reposition everything to line up. This is the area that was bent .Some heat and it soon pulled back into position.i have since had this piece blasted as its awkward to clean up . I had previously done a repair to rectify the chiseling and filler but now the panel was off the it made sense to make a nicer job especially as the metal was heavily pitted with rust . I am a fan of trying to keep original steel but at the same time I want this car to last and if its rusty there's not much anyone can do but replace it . This what I had before .looks like an aborted attempt to chisel off the panel and then just filled over. I made up new bit and some more repairs to the body mount . This piece had rusted with the usual signs of separation so I cut a piece out to expose the inner part .A quick blast and a new piece was welded in. I love to recycle any bits I can and this next part I made from a section of rear quarter I bought for the body mount .i have made up a repair piece for the front inner wing as the curve was just right for the wing mount .The oval shaped hole is the same as the original . I managed to burn through the hole whilst welding the captive nut but I am not to concerned at this stage.Tig welding would have been better but I don't have one at the home place yet . Sorry about the picture quality my best camera died in Egypt on holiday. That was an expensive lesson, never leave your camera in 40deg heat as the screens can't cope . Here is the part above welded in .i had to make some new bumps also ,that mimic the ones used at the factory to align the panels on the jig. I started just creating the radius on my folder ,scribing lines a few millimetres apart and bending each line a few degrees. Next bit was the reinforcement tabs for the bolt holes. I did salvage one to take some dimensions. The pics below give an idea of how I did them. I do admire people that take on a long-term project, and stick to it thoroughly all the way with attention to detail. Are you the type that enjoys the restoration process more than just having a car to drive and show, Mike:smile:

Are you the type that enjoys the restoration process more than just having a car to drive and show, Mike:smile:
Thank you ,Every Vw I have owned has needed some kind of restoration ,mainly because I could never afford one that was on the road .I am an Engineer Both mechanical and electrical but not in the car trade .From the age of 16 I have owned a Vw as did my father so its firmly in my DNA .I used to spend every moment I could on some project or another but now in my 40s working nights and other commitments i sometimes wish the oval was on the road again especially as we had a nice summer. I only ever used to go to shows for spares but I always loved taking the Oval to Stanford hall and did make it to the first Ivan hirst meeting . Your right though, From cycles to Vws I have always loved the challenge of having something old and broke and making it good again rather than showing and socialising . We are all different and for some ,maybe like yourself see these cars as treasures ,pieces of art ,that don't necessarily have to be driven to be enjoyed. Mike.

Why put the safety of something you enjoy owning and seeing, by placing it in the hands of someone driving behind in a battered Ford, if you take it out onto the public road.
