I pulled my Oval out of storage today to get it ready for Tatton Park this weekend, when I took it for a test drive I noticed a noise from the O/S/R wheel so took it home for further inspection.
As usual, after noticing what the fault was my mind wandered onto something else.....I wonder what's under all that underseal?
Now I knew I had a good car, it's completely original and unrestored but you never quite know how good something truly is until you've had a poke around. So I sprayed a bit of WD40 onto the underseal to soften it before getting a small blunt ply bar to gently scrape the surface to see what it would reveal.
I was most surprised when it slowly peeled away to reveal this.....
I was then able to just use my hands to pull on the edges and managed to remove large sections in one go.....

On this one you can actually see the imprint of a run in the paint in the underseal...

And this is the section of the arch that has the paint runs

Another section that I really liked was on the body mounting panel that shows the number 3 stamped into the panel and the imprint left in the underseal....

How about this for a bumper mount and side panel of the engine bay (underside)....

Even the inside of the wings are perfect!

One last image of the complete arch, looks like I'll have to remove the wing so really get it cleaned properly but I promise to re-use the original bolts and washers

Very nice, I've long been tempted to peel off an exploratory patch of the underseal on my '57, just not sure what I would find. I might have a go now I've seen yours.
Pics of the whole car would be good!

That's the problem! What do I do now, no going back. I've resisted for so long not to touch it but the temptation 'just to see' got too much for me. Looks like I'll have to go the whole hog now to make sure what the rest of the car is like.

Well I took the rear wing off to clean everywhere properly, it's come out quite well. I've not cleaned the bolts as yet but they will get done before the cleaned wing goes back on. Zero rust issues.....

Even the torsion tube has nice clean shiney black paint on it...

After having such a nice find on the rear wing section I decided I wanted to see what the front was like so I removed the wing and found this.....

After taking the rest of it off and giving it a bit more of a clean up it turned out nice too.....

I've not had chance to clean up the front axle and rest of the areas as yet but now that I've started then I'm going to have to carry on now. Lets just hope that the rest of the car turns out to be so good.
Best not get carried away because I've got to get it all back together yet, cleaned and ready for Tatton on Sunday!
Posted by: 64rotbox - 06 August 2011 03:20:38
Bloody nora, look at that! Oof. It's a shame I'm most likely giving Tatton a miss this year, as I'd have liked to see those undergarments for real.
Posted by: AW - 06 August 2011 13:56:19
Dont want to put a downer on it but now you have removed what looked like a very good under body protection covering. Whats going to protect if for the next 50+ years? are you going to treat it to some moden day covering ?? will be intresting to see if new is better than old. This is not a negative post just wondering what the plan of attack was going to be. It's still a lovely looking car  Andy
Posted by: GKL 7 - 06 August 2011 14:10:16
That stuff is better taken off.
If it chips and water gets behind it,that's when trouble can creep in.Some of the modern protectives are much better.
Is it original paint or was the car restored and then covered:?: If it's original that is fantastic.
Posted by: pre67vw - 06 August 2011 16:28:54
The factory under body protection is good stuff, but I don't think even they thought it would last 50+ years...

Not as far as I'm aware. Only dealer-applied stuff.
Posted by: bob-on - 06 August 2011 23:57:27
Well I hoped not to get carried away but I've ended up cleaning off all 4 inner arches. In response to the question of protection, it will be getting treated to more modern applications.
The question of whether it is original or not, I can tell you that it is truly unrestored and blew me away when I took the underseal off which I why I decided to share the images. Have a look at my previous reply giving the link to the pics of the car and you will see detailed shots of it's originality.
I can honestly say that had I known how good it was below then I wouldn't have removed it but once you've started you can't stop can you?
Anyway, have a look at the pics from today. First up, factory chalk markings on inner wing......

Then when cleaned up.....

Like the other side, this is also stamped with a number.....

Just have a look at the inside of the rear light cluster, the other one is the same too - amazing....

In this shot you can see how the body has been painted at the factory, there are lots of parts of the inner wings, under side of wings, sections of the bonnet, the bottom of the doors which are like this and only have a 'dusting' of paint.

Front inner wing all done too.

Ok, well when I took the under body coating off our oval there were the factory chalk marking under that as well, so I'd assumed it was put on at the factory.
Posted by: topolino - 07 August 2011 13:28:51
the factory did apply underseal as standard, single coat regular areas(europe)double coats extreme climates(norway, sweden, finland)
Posted by: ianmac - 07 August 2011 17:58:16
awesome, seeing OG inner wings with all the factory spot welds. For me a car with a clean OG underside is more desirable than one with mint restored topside.
Posted by: bob-on - 07 August 2011 22:44:33
Nice one Ian:thumbup: I'm with you on that one but saying that, even though my topside is unrestored it's still damn good...... I came 2nd in my class at Tatton today:d :d

yes very tidy, unmessed with.. where did the car originally come from?
Posted by: bob-on - 08 August 2011 00:04:41
It's originally from Sweden. The story behind it is that the original owner had it from '56 to '76 (Swedish road tax and mot stickers are still on the car showing '76). At some point it was involved in an accident requiring the wing and bonnet to be repainted. The inside of the bonnet shows superb panel beating skills.
It then went into a Museum from '76 until '99 when it was bought by a private collector who kept it until '06 when the guy I bought it off got hold of it.
As it had been off the road for so long he got it back on the road but after 4 years of ownership had only done 300km. I bought it in 2010.

Why is this advertised on Oldbug.com and the Samba?
Are they just old adverts or are you selling?
Posted by: Old Blue - 03 September 2011 15:43:23
This car is certainly for sale on the web but with non UK plates.
Great to use the forum as a launch pad to create interest and a possible a sale. Far better than the classified section.
Posted by: bob-on - 03 September 2011 21:32:35
It is up on Oldbug, I do apologise but it's not meant to be an advert on here. You will notice that it's not on the classified section here and there was no mention about it being for sale. I did put it up on there a while ago and forgot about it as I'm not certain about selling it hence not advertising it in this country anywhere, I didn't realise it was on theSamba as I've not looked at cars for sale for a while.
I have just Contacted Randy to ask him to remove it from both Oldbug and theSamba too.
I hope this is ok with everyone here?

It's OK with me. You're entitled to sell it if you want to, or keep it - either way it's your car so your choice.
If you did want to sell it, I'd hope you would feel advertising it on pre67vw would be a good idea though.
Posted by: bob-on - 03 September 2011 23:55:15
Thank you very much, don't want to appear as though I was 'using' the forum so if I do decide to sell then I will use the for sale section.
Posted by: GKL 7 - 03 September 2011 23:58:30
Just like to say this was not my reason for asking,i was just really suprised to see the car advertised. After you seemed so very pleased with it's condition.
Posted by: bob-on - 07 October 2011 14:14:23
It's been a while since I posted anything up here but I've not had chance to pay attention to it. As such I've finally come to conclusion that I must sell it as I cannot justify it sat in storage. I've put the original paint wheels back onto it with new crossplies and am going to write the advert in a bit.

I've got a question though, can anyone tell me if you know what make the seat recliner is as there's no obvious markings on it?

Seen it advertised on the Samba.
Are you certain that this car has original paint on the exterior?
If so then the condition is incredible, and if so why are you asking a sum of money which people are expecting for their very 'rat look' rusty 1966 Type lls?
Surely nearer to £20k would be right. Wish I'd the space for this very attractive Oval.

I'm sure it's got original paint on it however the bonnet and front wing has been repainted in what I can only assume was about 1976. The wierd thing is, the original paint is better than the 'new' paint.
As for price, I could ask £20k for it and then sit on it for months on end until someone comes along with the money. I'd rather it was sold to someone that will love it and keep it original without messing with it (just like I've done).
Some people just think that rusty (read - falling apart) 'rat look' are worth the money and other people are drawn into thinking the same but that's a whole other can of worms.
So if anyone wants to give me £20k for it then please feel free!!!:d

The paint on my 65 which has 60000km is faded and in very poor condition. It looks like it went off the road in 75 and back on in 1999/ If it is OG it looks in fantastic condition.
Posted by: bob-on - 11 October 2011 21:26:45
It went off the road in '76 and then back on in 2006. From 2006 to 2010 it only did 300km, from 1976 to 1999 it was in a museum. Goes some way to explain the condition.

What"s the underside of your wings like? Just stripped the underseal off the 65's wings. It's a story of " I stood in the middle of wing whilst painting it so missed the central wing edge!". There's no paint on the inside of the headlamp bowl. On the front edge just below the horn grill is solvent bubbles which I thought was rust. Should i paint the the inside or leave them OG? If it were a concours would I loose points?
Posted by: bob-on - 13 October 2011 11:08:53
I only stripped the underseal off the inside of 1 wing and it's pretty much as you describe! Only the bottom of the wing is painted, the top (if the wing is bolted to the car) has a light dusting of paint.
I wouldn't paint it, it's only ever original once and that cannot be replaced nor replicated. I wouldn't worry about concours points, if they wish to drop you points for having completely original paint even on the inside of the wing against someone who has had to repaint the inside of their wing then it's a hit I'd rather take than to lose original features.
