I thought I'd post this as it would best if this car goes to someone who will respect and appreciate what it is. I have known about this car since the late 80's. It was in the garage beside the home of the original owner and had been there over 20 years (from memory) a friend of mine spotted it one day when he was walking past and the doors of the garage were open. He was on it like a rash but the owner didn't want to sell it. Over the next ten years he kept popping in and asking if the car was for sale yet. Eventually, the original owner agreed to sell it to my friend Darren. The car is a '54 - original UK market Right Hand Drive and is very genuine and original. It's extremely solid, it think the only bit of rot is in one of the rear bumper mounts and this has been left so the car is 'untouched'. All the seats are in original dark green leatherette. I think it's Iceland green. Darren is an air-cooled VW mechanic so has gone through the brake system, replaced the shocks and anything else that was needed, but has tried to retain the originality of the car. He must of had the car for over 10 years now and I just stopped off at his workshop and he was talking about the fact he had so many cars and was going to have to get rid of something... He went on to say much though he loved the Oval, he never uses it and so has decided to pass it on. He doesn't go on this forum, so I said I'd put something up. He's not sure about the price, but wanted to see something around the eight grand figure. I thought this may be of interest to someone looking for a really straight unmolested UK RHD. Darren said he's got some pics he can email, but if you want to find out more about the car call 07785 500003 or email him [email protected] His workshop is VW Airfix, 132a Stanley Park Road, Carshalton, Surrey SM53JG

One question Ivan,is it OG paint or re-painted?
One question Ivan,is it OG paint or re-painted?
To be perfectly honest, I have listed what I can remember - I am guessing original as it has certainly not been repainted since Darren has had it and it was parked up for eons prior to that. If you have any questions just give Darren a call. He knows everything about the car and will be happy to answer any questions.
Fancy the sound of this. Shame if the lowered mob get it.
I would agree with you on that one, and that is why I posted it info on here. It is a real survivor and really does need to end up in the right hands.
Very intrested in seeing the Pics of this.
Ping an email over to Darren and he will send you some pics. I think he's even got pics of when it was in the garage. But don't quote that are 100% fact. I may be wrong. Art Editor Steve has just reminded there are pics of it coming out of the garage - we had them in the mag in Mike Pye's column shortly after Darren went and got the car.

This car is a real gem. It hasn't really been seen in public for a long long time. Probably one of the nicest UK ovals I have ever seen needing minimal work to make it tip top. It is all in original paint.
Don't let your son near it then. How hypercritical.
I was dead against the '56 being messed with (lowered that is). Jon had to go ahead and do it to be in with the peerage of friends. I doubt he'd lower another Beetle, he's realised that problems arise, and that the car is worth less now.

Darren is trying to sort out some pics. I called him last night and he said he only had prints - he'd never taken any pics of it with a digital camera. He said he'll get some as soon as he can. I told him to take digital pics of the prints for the time being. Hopefully you won't have to wait long.

I thought VW stopped marking semaphores left and right in '49? Jokes aside it is a great car. The '54 original interior is great reference for me, I've never seen green leatherette only red or beige. More pics would be great, but to see it at a show would be even better!

My green RHD '56 oval, MDR 155 had the later style 'ribbed' seats as opposed to the more flat 'slab' type of the '54 I had. The '56 had green seats as I remember, though I've never seen the earlier oval seats in green. The '54 oval was PYM 313, anyone have this:?:

Hi everyone. I bought this car a few months ago, its great. I have done about 500 miles in it around the Cambridgeshire countryside, with the only fault being that the front number plate fell off. It needs a little welding on the rear bumpers hangers and rear offside inner arch but apart from that it is very solid. The battery is not that great. I have not had a beetle for a few years, does anyone know if you can still get 6V Bosch batteries? I seem to remember when I last bought one (about 5 years ago) they were being discontinued.

Some one will tell you on here. People are using some high output ones and i am sure that some of the posters on here are using them :d . Have you got some fresh photos of the car in your ownership ?????? Welcome to the site. Andy W

Hi Rod, welcome and congrats on your car purchase, looks/sounds like a good one. I think I have the type of battery Andy is on about. It is a high capacity 70+amp/hrs, its a German brand 'Banner', I got it from Barclay at 'Status VW' It is a 3 cell unit, in a black rubbery casing so is spot on period correct, the original metal batery cover even fits on. Afternoon Rod : just noticed your battery info request. I've been out of the battery business for a long while so I too am unsure about 6-volt Bosch items. I worked for an agent stocking LINCON batteries for many years and indeed have one of theirs on my 1956 . It might be worth looking at their website (They're based in Leigh-On-Sea) and comparing specifications. When arriving in Ramsgate in 1956, beetles were fitted with mainly EXIDE batteries . My uncle who bought the car new always said the first thing to go wrong was the English battery which only lasted eight years !! Lincon's type 501 88 amp/hr capacity matches the dimensions of the original item exactly. Later 6 volt beetles were fitted with a type 404 (nominally 71 amp'hr capacity). The simplest guide to what was fitted originally is provided by the size of the metal lid and retaining strap. Try not to be tempted by the MBG six-volt type : though similar in capacity, they were known to foul the underside of the rear seat when ample-reared aunts were being taken out shopping ! There's nothing mysterious about higher capacity fitment. Liken it to venturing into the desert with a large tank of water as opposed to a small one. Basically The spec stating ampere hour capacity is an indication of the amps available over a stated period, eg my ovals sidelights draw about 4 amps ( bulbs totalling approximately 24 watts divided by six volts equals 4 amps ) so in theory my 88 amp battery would last 22 hours ( 4 amps for 22 hours equals 88 amp/hrs ). Unless you intend drag racing your car, I'd opt for the largest capacity six volt that space allows. It is worth remembering that staying six volt means cables carry higher amperage than an equal wattage load would impose on a twelve volt circuit so never be tempted to run thinner cables when replacing or adding to beetle looms. Hope this helps !

Hi Rod, That's a nice looking car you've bought, congratulations! In answer to your query regarding batteries, I bought a 'Lincoln' 6-volt unit with the hard rubber casing from Lincoln Batteries in Leigh-on-Sea a few months ago. This is the same firm as 'Jollychuffy mentions in his post. Their service was excellent, the battery arriving the next day, securly packaged, and with concise instructions on how to set it up, as well as extra acid. They were also cheaper than anyone else I tried! Hope this helps, Gavin.
Jus noticed dents in midle of roof:( can these be got out wivout loosin org paint n headliner:?:
I have no intention of painting it at the moment. I agree it is a shame about the dents but they are not too bad. It is an unrestored car and has imperfections throughout, but I like that. Apparently it was parked up in a garage from the late 60s/early 70s and the guys kids used to play in and on it. The small dents on the roof are from where they sat on it! I don't know too much of the cars history. I have written to the 'original' owner but no reply. It turns out that he was not the original owner but bought the car in 1958. It had originally been bought in July 1954 by a lady and then sold by Ride & Clarke, Stockwell Road, London in 1958. I was told that it had the original engine but this turns out not to be the case. The original engine number is 1-0798765 but the engine currently is 1-0636490. Darren told me that he thought it was the original engine and the gentleman he bought it off said that he had not changed it. Perhaps this is why the original lady sold it?

His dream is to look around on a VW Bug salvage yard (or yunk yard?? I am sorry, I do not know the exact expression for it - the place where you can find many old VW oval bugs). Can you please help me where is/are VW oval Bugs salvage yards in California?? Please tell me the name of it and the address. Thank you for your answer, Bernadett
volksworld man Ivans 1st post on this saysnothin about these dents but dtails all other things:?
Cheers for pointing this out... I had seen the car three or four times at various stages over the years, but I hadn't really gone over it with a fine toothed comb, and certainly not to the kind of extent I would have if I was thinking of buying it... What I did was try and give some basic info about the car to the kind of people who would be, in my opinion, the type who would love to own the car. Ultimately, the chap who know owns it would seem to have found out about it from that post I made, so I am happy I made the post. It stands to reason that if he had gone to view the car and hadn't thought it was for him, he wouldn't have purchased it. It wasn't your post that impressed me, far from it, it was the 'how thoughtful, thanks for posting this up' reply that impressed me... Sorry, I should have said it would have impressed me. I uncovered another RHD Oval about a month ago. The owner had to sell it and asked if I could help find the right person for it. Initially, I was very interested myself but I simply didn't have anywhere to put it and it couldn't live outside. The car was SUPER EARLY - 459 645 - it was built on 21st March '53 to be precise - and has been in storage since 1990. It is in really good shape. Once I had made the decision that I couldn't buy it myself. I simply phoned someone who I thought would want to own it and he'd bought it ten minutes later over the phone. As the guy who was buying it lived a long way from the location of the car - I went to view it on his behalf (and before anyone points a finger - at no personal gain, I did it as a favour). The minute I saw the car- I wished I hadn't mentioned it to anyone! However, like I said, I wasn't the person for that car. I could have posted the info on here and I am sure it would have gone the same day, especially at the price it was up for, but all that would have done is upset people....
Don't worry Ivan. We appreciate you. Ignore them... its jealousy...
Julian, worry not - I'm not fussed. George hit the nail on the head. I helped two fellow VW fans out - one who wanted to sell a car and one who wanted a car - and it wasn't like I even got a drink out of it. In future if I post a tip off on here - I think it'd be an idea if I paid to have a full 100 point professional inspection done first. Just in case I get sued for being helpful.

Jon fancies it as its an og paint right hooker, but he'd have to sell the left hooker first.
