I'm off to see a '62 Bug tomorrow.
Garaged and dusty and dry....
Last tax disc 1980... under 50000 miles so I'm told.
Will it be a Gem?
I'll let you know :D

Some more info....
One owner from new. Purchased in Belgium and theb brought back here. its got original Purchase receipt. All docs and paperwork and handbooks - in perfect condition.
The under side is covered in surface rust - but i couldnt see any holes - although, its hard to see it all as its on flat tyres and the garage is a bit full..
It broke down and was limped into the garage in 1980...
Posted by: austria - 25 March 2012 20:13:18
In austria it is called "erbsensbeibgrün"
But I think it's not the same in UK![-x

so does anyone know what colour it is?
Its got a red interior too...
Posted by: JULIANROBINSON - 26 March 2012 22:20:22
Great find Julian! Well done!
It is definitely not an original '62 colour though! It would have been Anthracite, black or Pearl White with that interior.

Could be '55 one year only Jungle Green:

I reckon it's L514 Emerald Green
Posted by: JULIANROBINSON - 27 March 2012 17:41:05
I went and collected it today.
On removing it from the dark garage it became obvious that it was originally white.
The lady who was selling on behalf of her late husband had no Idea it had been painted when i asked her the other day... but it appears it was done before they met.
Also in the paperwork it says it was white from new. .. oh and the receipt for about £50 in 1972 for the full inside and out respray tells the story too...
It appears to have its original purchase receipt, all UK MOTs, all UK Tax Discs, Original Disc from belgium. All the hand books and more...
I've got a long night ahead looking through that lot.
The car is surprisingly solid - But battered.
The brakes even work as do the lights and wipers...
I've poured diesel in the bores to see if it will unseize, but dont hold out much hope.
Turns out the milage is actually 70,000 kms... so about 43500 miles!

So how come the car is RHD if it's originally from Belgium?
So how come the car is RHD if it's originally from Belgium?
It was ordered in RHD form for import to the UK.
He was living out there and working for BP at the time.
Strangely no one thought to order a MPH speedo!
Posted by: Rich Oakley - 27 March 2012 20:28:41
Very interesting Julian! From what I can gather, the car must have spent relatively little time in Belgium. The number plate would suggest it was registered in the UK sometime around March-June 1963?
Did the car turn up in north/east Kent somewhere?
Tell us more please and more photos. This is my kind of find!!
Posted by: JULIANROBINSON - 27 March 2012 23:05:47
The car was in Surrey.
The owner was in the Fulham area when it was registered I believe. The first UK insurance i can find is from July 1963...
Here are a few more photos to keep you going...

Hi,
Just out of interest, what did you use to remove the green paint? I have a similar VW that was repainted. did you use a chemical pant stripper? Was it hard work?
Thanks,
Donald
Posted by: JULIANROBINSON - 19 November 2012 00:33:43
I was using paint thinners on a rag, but I'm now using a DA Sander... its all coming off!
Posted by: dknchin - 19 November 2012 11:10:39
Great. Thanks for the reply. What grit rating did you use in the sander?

Posted by: JULIANROBINSON - 25 November 2012 18:42:01
I'm using 80 grit... but that doesnt mean its the right thing to use!
