So I believe this is the only set of this kind in the world. I have done plenty of research and certainly believe no one in the US, UK and Europe owns this complete kit.
So a short history lesson for those of you who don’t how Sauer Und Sohn (Sauer and Son) got involved in developing engine parts for VW. Well, S&S are based in Germany, they have been producing specialist equipment for the automotive industry for over 60 years and continue to produce parts for VWs (see their website: www.sauerundsohn-oem.com/vw_components.htm)
In the mid-60s (c1965) they supported the early collaboration between Porsche and VW in developing a racing engine for rallying. The early production of two specialist kits was the Zenith 32NDIX (relying on the Porsche Pre-A carbs) and the later Solex PII. The PII was further developed by Sauer/VW and successfully run on the Salzburg Rallaye Beetles in the late 60s early 70s. (See link: www.rallybugs.com/engtrans.htm)

Well the history lesson is over and now to what I own: A complete, original Sauer Und Sohn set for the Zenith 32NDIX kit.

I have an unmolested (ie not ported or messed around with), original set of forged aluminium manifolds. Clearly bearing the S&S logo and cast with the “Made in Germany” insignia, these lightweight manifolds were found on a Norwegian rally bug from the 60s. I know of several sets of manifolds that are on cars, but many have been ported over the years.

I also have an original matching linkage, which was taken from the same rally bug. It was missing the original carb rods, but I have sourced all the missing parts from a quality Porsche specialist. I know of a few linkages in existence, but many were discarded for newer Chinese sets (??) or butchered over the years to fit other carbs, but here is an original linkage, which simply requires a clean:

I also have the matching set of Zenith 32NDIX carbs (again off the same bug); these move freely and came off a running rally engine. But they have stood around for a couple of years in my possession, so I have bought rebuild kits for both.

Then I have source a set of original 60s Knecht air filters. These are fairly rare, in any condition, but the set I own, have been restored and chromed, and clearly bear all the original Knecht pressings and retain the correct clamps for the Zenith carbs.

Whilst several people may now be claiming to know someone who owns a set like this, then this may be true, but to complete my set (and make it as rare as I claim….) I have the matching Sauer Und Sohn Valve Covers. These are cast magnesium (NOT Aluminium) and are extremely lightweight. I have all the bolts for these and they are in perfect condition (no cracks, or broken fins etc).

I know a certain collector in the US has been looking for a set of these for some time (he has even used a picture of my covers for his wanted ad on The Samba! :d but no luck!)
So, whilst I was speaking to a German Collector at the recent UK VolksWorld Show, who said he MAY know someone, who knows someone, who MAY have a set, until proven otherwise, I do not know of another pair of these covers on the planet (and they won’t be part of matching manifolds and linkage set)
So I had always hoped to put this complete set on my engine, but I have taken my project in a different direction. So I have put this set on the classifieds ads as they deserve to either go to discerning collector of vintage speed parts, or to someone, like me, who wanted to know their vehicle was actually “one of a kind” and they had “the only Sauer and Sohn engine set of its kind” in the world!
So I hope anyone can provide any proof of another set of the vlave covers, or any other Sauer Und Sohn parts (I'm aware they produced a exhaust, which I was trying to source over the last couple of years).....and if anyone is interesting in owning the [b]ONLY SET IN THE WORLD[/b].....head over to the classifieds! :thumbup:
