Im trying to install my front hubs, but the bearings seem to be too tight to go the whole length of the shaft/spindle? A friend of mine has told me they are always tight, and to guide them on with a hammer. i have done so with the spacer (see photo) but this is as far as it goes? My fear is that if i hammer them on they wont come off again, especially as i need to remove them later to install the brake shoe hardwear, (once ive found some) the parts are from 'vw heritage' page 25, nos 4-12 in catalogue. they are >1965 so i cant understand why they wont fit? I searched the samba, but all i found was a thread with two guys arguing the gramatical correctness over the description on roller bearings/ tapered and ball bearings  the second photo shows a line of of the parts. Id also like to mention some of the old hubs i bought had the 'ball bearings' in them. the parts i have are tapered rollers in a casing. i assume this is just the modern equivalent of the old ball type and not that i have the wrong bearings, as they are labeled as >65. Please help, im at a complete loss here...

Give me a call if you want, we supply O.E. bearings and I would be happy to do some measuring for you if it would help!

Lee, I had the same roblem installing my front drums. The problem is the bearings. They should be the roller type. I found that the tappered type don't fit as there's a 'concave' on the spindle that only the ball bearing type will slot into. I swapped the bearings back to the ball type and they slotted in no problem. Chris

Hi thanks for your coments. Jules, we have spoke in the past i think, but ive lost your contact details, can you pm me or provide a number to call you on. Hi chris, glad someone else has experienced the same problem, they are such a simple item, i guess this is why it threw me so much when they didnt fit. Im a bit annoyed with the vw heritage, as i specifficaly told them i had a split beetle and they assured me the pre65 were correct. oh well, cant even sent them back now. Still DESPERATLY need brake drum internals.....

Thanks jules for pointing me in the right direction. (oh and the sterring wheel, well i couldnt not buy something) A light rubbing with wen n dry on spindles was enough to help the bearings slide on. The spacers however i think i must have been given the wrong ones or they were made faulty, as i had to machine them out about 1000/thou inch. any way the wheels are on. Just need to fit the new rear axle boots then the body can go on. I will post a pic of my complete chassis tonight, Please dont pick holes in it though, id post on the samba if i wanted that  STILL NEED BRAKE DRUM INTERNALS!!! Anyone...?
