Nice to see that the VW38 has now been completely lost into a repro
There you go yet again. Nothing nice to say, nothing helpful. Not one damn time that I can remember! Why don´t you post a picture of your car? Or answer a question when someone asks one? Or do a how to? Don´t just sit there slating everyone you can, trying to bait people just to get a response, simply because you crave the attention - thats something that most people manage to leave behind after the age of about twelve. So what if bits of the 38 are new? It´ll still be the most original 38 that there is. Better than being lost at the bottom of someones garden in a corner of Lithuania.
Nice to see that the VW38 has now been completely lost into a repro
 Christ, nobody can do anything right when your about, can they? They could have had it shot blasted, and painted to preserve it, and left the remains in a glass case never to leave the museum. I'm far more excited by what they've done, are you not at all in awe of the time and craftsmanship put into it? There is still a lot of '38 metal there, they really have spent ages meticulously saving old bent and rusty metal that on any other restoration would have simply been chopped out and replaced. There, I bit.

I can tell you that the Grundmann museum is amazing and full of some extremely rare/important stuff, so it must be there for a reason. You obviously have your views on the VW38 being restored, I can see both sides of the argument - but the craftsmanship that has gone into that resto is amazing.

The 03 belonged to a German actor that you won´t have heard of - Götz George. And if you genuinely can´t see how belittling it is to dismiss the Grundmanns work on that car as you did, then I can´t help you.

Hi Ovaltine, because of the thoughts like yours - most rare cars wich are shown on hight class shows or museum ( i mean Mercedes, Audi race car,Horch,... ) are not shown befor or during the restauration. I know of very know cars were was just the chassis or the engine and now there are komplett cars. If you take the 38 from the Autostadt - the car was restaured in the 50 by useing an new Split body - today from 38 on the car is only orginal the back window, the back hodd and the dash board. On our 38 we could use the orginal doors ( only known in the world ) the roof, the back sides, the back hood , half of the front hood. I found an orginal chassis from 38 and a lot orginal 38 parts and you say it is a copy ? Come on - so most split and hebs are copy or what ? Almost all restored car have not the orginal fenders, doors floor pans ,... they were all changed during their normal lifes or during their restauration - so these cars are also not orginal anymore ? I now understand the top restauration companys that just show the cars after restauration - I think i will not post anymore pics of our next car that we will restaure ( we will now start at our 128 schwimmer wich is the oldest in the world and is also a prototyp )I thought that the people can learn that everything can be reatured and have fun with the pics. - but i most be wrong. The current restoration hasn´t lost anything that wasn´t thrown away back then, so whats the problem? What good does it do anyone stuck in a case with half an old Soviet era banger welded onto it? Hardly a model of originality and totally un-representative of how the car was ever intended to appear. Who are you to decide to arbitrarily end the history of this car by putting it in a box and drawing a line under it? What you apparently think of as the originality of the car was lost a long time ago, and nothing anyone car do can bring that back. I´m surprised you have any interest in anything that doesn´t still have it´s original paint, engine, tyres and first petrol in the tank.
but they've lost the original car now.
The original car was lost years ago which is obvious from how it was found and seeing as everything that was original when found is being used in the rebuild then from my perspective rebuilding it is the best and only way forward, especially given the unbelievably rare parts and old school skills being lavished upon it. To the whole HO gang...keep up the good work and look forward to seeing it at BC next year.

Personally despite thinking "Ovaltine" is wrong in thinking the '38 should have been left as it was found, I also think the villification of his opinion is over the top. In isolation it's just an opinion and I think if it have been voiced 18 months ago on The Samba people would have discussed it a little more rationally...but that was when it was sitting in the weeds. The fact that by now everybody is thoroughly sick of the argument and that the decision to restored has long been accepted, hasn't helped. Also what hasn't helped is the guy's apparent negative attitude generally so perhaps he's a grumpy old man like me. Come on...lighten up...it's just another opinion, I can't wait for his next grumpy outburst.:d

Maybe I'm a little direct with my comments, but having said that they are views on a subject and part of discussion for the forum, which is surely what its for:? I do not post crude remarks (not intentionally) or bad language, but I will bear in mind your comments when posting in future. I also remember that this site is all down to your time and hard work, and I certainly respect that and enjoy the privilege of using it:beer: As far as the Grundman's VW38 is concerned, not everyone else here has considered the reconstruction to be the best way. Standard split,48RME and I think a couple of others expressed the same view on an earlier discussion about it and much the same response came back :
Hello Standard split, it is funny that you call our 38 an replica - so you have no idea what is orginal on the 38 from the factory and the hitler cab. Our 38 has an orginal chassis from a 38, the ONLY orgianl doors from 38 , the back decklit, half the front lit, the complet roof, the complet back out and insides, on orginal steering wheel, an engine from 1939 a gearbox from 38,back orginal 38 bumper,... and so this car is a replica ? The factory 38 was "restaured " about 1950 by useing a NOS split - so they took the orginal back window , the back lid and the orginal 38 dash and put it in the NOS body.
In contrast to the politeness from our administrator, I have to contend with horrid remarks from this person:[-x
...like yourself, he is an annoying idiot.
Last word on the VW38 goes to 48 RME:beer:
.... I would have liked to see the VW38 left as found, an 'ugly' survivor full of unfortunate yet historic updates, where a few crucial 1938-only details would have still stood out. Once beautifully finished - and I have no doubt it will be painstakingly faultless in its accuracy - you won't be able to tell what's original from what's been remade. It's all debatable but I think I prefer to see the untouched historic evidence stand out, even if there are only fragments of it.
In 1958 i took my first ride in a VW,i was on my way home from maternity hospital:lol:I was 3 days old.It was a 1957 split screen panel van,I grew up with always at least one Volkswagen in the garage,my father had a passion for them. When i was 16 years old i purchased my first old VW,a 1954 deluxe oval, that was in 1974. After this i purchased a '52 Standard sunroof,a year later a '53 Zwitter. Since then i have owned a 1951 deluxe CC split,a '52 deluxe sunroof CC split,a 1947 CCG beetle and lastly a 1950 Karmann Kabriolett. And i can assure you,you do not own a classic VW either. Not by what you have already told us. My posts always closely follow yours, because on every occassion you take to your keyboard here, you either insult or offend someone and most of the time the person offended is someone i know,so i am naturally going to stick up for that person, rather than a total offensive stranger, who insists on remaining anonymous. What I said was done with a lot of reserve since it is a sensitive subject; Knowing how much the Grundmann family have poured their heart, knowledge and soul into this project, I am extremely happy that this car ends up in their hands, they deserve to have this amongst their extraordinary collection which we are fortunate enough to enjoy every time there is a show in Hessisch Oldendorf. I have personal views with respect to how the found relic could have initially been handled but if it is going down the route of restoration, then I think that what they are doing is great and no one can do it better. Again, as with Standard Split, it is the tone of your conversation and sweeping statements about what one should do or not do which is offensive. Compare my original text next to yours, I think you'll see it's quite different even if we may agree on some aspects of the issue. So please, don't drag me down as your 'pal' to back your comment that has sparked quite some unhappy reactions by the sounds of it. I don't like that sort of thing, thank you very much. my original remark: ....
Oh and Ovaltine...I think you'll find that when another special car comes along that takes George's fancy you'll see him in another vintage VW. In fact we're all waiting for that but because the car that George wants doesn't come up very often, we may need to wait a little while...
Come on 55 Kab, what's he waiting for, Splits, Ovals, Schwimmers, Kubels and just about everything else are up for sale on the web regularly. Is he waiting for the Grundman's to finish the VW38, or is it a Hebmuller he wants (there's a few here after that one), or maybe your smashing Kab when you've completed. I rekon he's just skint and a dreamer:roll:
...don't drag me down as your 'pal' to back your comment that has sparked quite some unhappy reactions by the sounds of it. I don't like that sort of thing, thank you very much.
Whats this drag me down? Okay different approach to the subject, but same ending wanted: VW38 preserved as found, not lost in a reconstruction. We're not alone in this view…
...Don't get me wrong, I think it's fantastic it's being restored and the HO team are carrying out a truely amazing job but given all this, a little bit of me feels that it would have been better to fully reconstuct a 38 lookalike given one already exists in the VW Museum and left this original as it was found. It's one of those debates that will run and run and never end.

Now the VW38 is well into 'restoration' there is even less of it left than when found. Its merely an illusion now :!:
And I'm sure there are others here. Maybe a pre67 poll would be rather interesting:wink:

I know one of the kind of Vintage VWs "50 Karmann" is looking for and they're not the kind of car that pops up everyday. What is it...you don't need to know.
...And i can assure you,you do not own a classic VW either. I have had several e-mails from other members here asking, and i put this far more politely than it was asked of me,who's the idiot??? So Ovaltine,if you want to remain offensive, why hide?Stand by your words.Come out from behind the handle.Identify yourself.Maybe then if it's a recognised name, you may be taken seriously. But i doubt it. There again, it might all be Bullshit, you know like you coming around to excavate my garden, that didn't happen either did it:roll: I'm behind you:twisted:
My '70 is not a classic VW? Its not a pre'67, so what, to me its a lovely scruffy 40 year old air-cooled Beetle. Its because there are individuals like you around, that people are able to partake in these internet activities without having to provide their name or other personal information. You took a pop at me not long after I joined, then there's the threat made to Tony's car.(I saw your post!!!!) As for your garden, I seriously hate to think what you have buried there – you seem to have too much time on your hands – you're here every single day.

guys i think you really both need to chill out ovaltine-as much as it is your opinion this site is just not really into some of your outlooks whether relevant or not.i visit here and volkzone and i know you may not like it but you are just not doing yourself any favours with such aggressive views.yes some people can be a bit stuffy(in a preserving the essence of the site way) or only interested in pre67vws only but thats the nature of the site as a way of talking to likewise people,in the same way that when i want to read abt boobs/arguments/and sob stories i go on volkzone so this car that george wants,is it that rare beast known as a 412,as he seems to have had most other vws and fancies something that no one else has?
so this car that george wants,is it that rare beast known as a 412,as he seems to have had most other vws and fancies something that no one else has?
You'll have to ask George that.
what's he waiting for
I think he's saving up for a scruffy '70. I don't care if George owns a vintage VW or not, whether he can afford it or not - none of that is important. What is important is that he's an active person within the hobby, which he is. Likewise it doesn't matter that you don't own a pre '67. I remember a few years back when George was taking two cars to Bad Camberg, driving them - not taking them on a trailer. Obviously he couldn't drive two at the same time so he lent one to a mate (in itself a very generous gesture). Then the one George was driving had an engine problem and had to be left at BBT in Belgium, so he jumped in his other car - but being the sterling fellow he is, he didn't take the drivers seat - he rode as a passenger. I think generosity like that is rare these days, George is definately one of the good guys. You on the otherhand, we have very little information about as you're not willing to come out from behind your username. We have no idea if you go to shows - no idea if you help others in the hobby. Helping people and sharing information is how you get your opinion respected, hiding behind your username spouting rants - nobody cares what you think and just wishes you go away. All we know about you is that you moan at most things and are not a fan of making friends with pre 67 forum members. Oh and you like to bring up old arguments again and again, for example any valid discussion of what should/shouldn't happen to the VW38 ended when the Grundmanns decided to restore it - any further discussion is pointless and only serves to make yourself appear like a moaning old git. The spat between George and Standardsplit is old news, move on.

Point two,you keep insisting i threatened "Tony's" car,not true i aimed my comments at it's present owner Standardsplit not the car.A fact that the moderator here accepts as i apologised at the time, he has asked you on a number of occassions to not keep bringing it up,but it would appear you love to try and cause trouble. So as you keep insisting on saying different,i will take this oppurtunity to call you a LIAR. My garden is very tidy, nothing is buried there,i like it that way. And finally there goes your arrogance again, who the hell are you to say how i will spend my time. There is no time limit as to how long and how often you can visit this website. You have not come here to gain knowledge,or to share what you may already know. You have come to inflict your opinions on people, whether they are right or wrong, because in your mind, they are yours so they MUST be correct. I only wish the forum had, like some other websites, an ignore button.Where you are concerned it would probably be the most commonly used feature amongst the members here.

The car looked in a pretty sorry state, and the owner - not the same chap as in the video, it had been sold on a couple of times since then - looked (and acted) like a complete f*ckwit. Oh well...

That's the one Ben. TKX 836. I spoke to Rob Tomlinson at VW Euro in Holland,i must say, a very nice lad, obviously not the same individual as you witnessed later. And one other little bit of info i remembered, purchase price of the car to me with 12 months tax and test...... .....£300,ah!the good old days

Maybe it's being cared for now... good stuff, anyway. I'm sure it had t-bars on it when I saw it that time. I'll have to check with Martin, as he was with me witnessing the 'display', which was taking place very near to his campervan at the time. Back to stock? Well, I'd hope so but it's difficult to tell with you, sometimes... :)
You'll just have to ask yourself would i take it back to Stock:wink:
you know what (especially given it's not Resto-Cal low) I don't think you would, I reckon a quick drive in it would have you keeping it just as it is! I think it actually came up for sale about a year ago on Vzi and is seen from time to time at the shows. I'm pretty sure if you posted "who owns this car" on the JG54 section of Vzi the owner would make himself known. Do it George, then you can be a Bad Camberg bad boy like me...
